C C Bailey 219 squadron DFC citation
Dear all,
Does anyone have details on the DFC citation for C C Bailey of 219 squadron? I am trying to confirm his names as either Colin Cyril or Cyril Colin. Men of The Battle of Britain has him as Colin Cyril but I think that may be incorrect. TIA Kind regards Gerry |

Re: C C Bailey 219 squadron DFC citation
Cheers Ed,
I am aware of the monument website but we are checking the naming because it is possibly incorrect. I think the DFC citation, which will be correct, will contradict the Information in Wynn and the Monument website. Regards Gerry |
Re: C C Bailey 219 squadron DFC citation
Gerry,
I expect you are aware of the following, but just in case something is new. All his entries on the London Gazette are just 'C.' or 'Cyril'. He is also recorded on his AIR 78 name card as just 'Cyril'. (AIR 78/7/1/806) The Air Force Lists for January 1942, January 1943, January 1944 and July 1945 all have him as 'C. Bailey'. So where could the 'Colin' have come from ? A post-war addition ? A mix-up with another family member ? Regards, Martin Gleeson. |
Re: C C Bailey 219 squadron DFC citation
Cheers Martin,
That all seems to confirm his first name as Cyril then. I'm not sure where the confusion with the name Colin originated from, perhaps it is his middle name. Thanks for your reply. Gerry |

Decorations Flt. Lt. CYRIL BAILEY, R.A.F.V.R. D.F.M. : The official citation is as follows :— D.F.C.—Flight Lieutenant Cyril Bailey, • R.A.F.V.R., No. 219 Squadron. With the exception of six months on operational training duty, this officer has been flying operationally since June, 1940, and has been directly responsible for the destruction of at least three enemy aircraft. He has a fine operational record, during which his keenness to impart his knowledge to less experienced observers and coolness in the face of the enemy have been outstanding. |

OK he is a bit had to track down but he was born I think 25 Dec 1919 to Cyril Bailey and Mary Emma Bailey (nee Haigh) - He was at Wellingborough Grammar School 1930 to 1936 and died Mansfield 3rd Qtr 2002
All records have him as just Cyril Bailey |
