Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
We would like to announce the availability of the Luftwaffe Officers Career Summaries for 2023. With this edition, the statistics are:
Total number of officers represented are: 92,914 in 4, 919 pages for a real gain of 3,218 officers and 192 pages of information beyond that of last year's edition. Changes: 6,164 officers altered (includes all deletions and additions). New officers added: 3,281 Deletions: 366 At the current rate of expansion, we should attain the total of 100,000 officers in about three years. This is approaching the theoretical total of 120,000 which had supposedly existed in total. Enjoy! Larry deZeng IV Douglas G. Stankey |

Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
A minor update concerning
Josef Bisping: †13/14.02.45 Hptm., 3./Vers.Verb.OKL KIA - in Ar 234 B-2/N (SM+FE) crash while attempting a night take-off from Havelhausen near Oranienburg. [Version #2: 23.02.45 Hptm., 3./Versuchverband OKL KIA - Ar 234 B-2N crashed following a night take-off from Oranienburg.] Buried at Oranienburg-Lehnitz. Albert Vogl 13/14.02.45 Hptm., with Versuchverbandes OKL airborne radar operator, KIA – in Ar 234 B-2/N V15 (SM+FE) that crashed near Oranienburg when the airfield lights were abruptly switched off causing the a/c to stall. Buried in Lehnitz These two entries can be tidied (they were killed in same aircraft). The date is confirmed as 13.02.45, there are photos off their graves at: http://www.luftkrieg-oberhavel.de/webs/germany/g022.htm Also, the aircraft was not V15, which was WNr.130025, but WNr.140145. SM+FE is correct. |

Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
First of all: best wishes for the new year 2024!
I too have a minor update, concerning: HOLLAENDER, Rolf. c.01.44 Hptm., Kp.-Chef Stabskomp. I./NJG 2. August 1940: Leutnant in 5./NJG 1 (Do 17Z U5+BB & G9+JN), from September 1940 in 2./NJG 2 (unit was converted, Do 17Z R4+YK) - source: Flugbuch Kurt Wacker || 7 January 1943: 24.00 - 05.00 Geburtstagfeier von Oblt. Holländer. 15 December 1943: Oblt Holländer begrüßt (logbook Elsässer, member of Ergänzungsstaffel/NJG 2) || April 1945: car crash while serving with II./NJG 2 (presumably Stab II./NJG 2). ('Verlegung der II./NJG 2 von Vechta nach Wiener-Neustadt' von Rolf Hollaender) Spelling according to the Flugbücher and logbook Elsässer is 'Holländer'. Kind regards, Timon |

Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
Thank you, retje.
Another comment I have is the following. For Major Karl Montag, the document gives Credited with 3 victories. However, the three victories he scored while serving as a Zerstörer pilot were all rejected by the OKL/RLM Abschusskommission. In my opinion, 'credited with' gives the impression that he scored three confirmed victories. I would suggest saying: "Made three victory claims which were rejected." Kind regards, Timon |
Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
ZANTOPP, Hans-Joachim. (DOB: 22.03.22). 13.08.43 Lt. Stab III./KG 100 POW - Do 217 K-2 (6N+BD)
spelling in A.I. 660 (19 August 43) is ZANTROPP |
Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
The 01.07.44 entry below is from Luftwaffen-Personalamt Dienstalterliste documents and spell his last name ZANTOPP.
It would be interesting to know how Ulf Balke spells the name in his unit history of KG 100, and the same for Christopher Shores' Mediterranean Air War, Volume Four. Additionally, does BA-MA Freiburg Signatur PERS6 have his personnel file? L. deZ. ZANTOPP, Hans-Joachim. (DOB: 22.03.22). 13.08.43 Lt. Stab III./KG 100 POW - Do 217 K-2 (6N+BD) lost during an anti-shipping mission to Syracuse, shot down 30 km N of Milazzo - rescued by Walrus of 283 Sqdn. 01.07.44 promo to Oblt./A1. |
Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
I have his name as ZANTOPP...source WASt. BAMA in Pers6/169656 also
|
Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
Excellent, then, that settles it, John. That's good enough for me.
L. deZ. |
Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
Definitely Zantopp-he gets a mention in mention in my Do 217 book
|
Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
indeed! On p88, his name having presumably been corrected on the document you've quoted from, his subsequent interrogation in the UK. Thanks!
|
Re: Luftwaffe Officer Summaries for 2023
When in doubt, I recommend checking names on the Diffusion des Nachnamen (distribution of surnames) map at https://www.kartezumnamen.eu
Trying the alternatives, there's a nil return for the name Zantropp but 58 instances of Zantopp. |
