info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
Hi All,
For one of my next artworks I would like to depict Johnnie Johnson flying over Dieppe during operation Jubilee in his Spitfire. Now the thing is, in his book "wing leader" he describes this actuon as being part of County of Chester Squadron, 610, flying from West Malling. But no mention of the exact type of spitfire, the serial nr. or the codes on the aircraft. As assume it's a Mk.V, but don't know if it's a Va, Vb, clipped wing, new windshield, old windshield etc. I would like to get this accurate in the artwork. Any info appreciated, Thanks, Wiek Luijken www.luijken.com |

Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
Hi
a favourite link to an interesting page, and a good discussion ....!!! his italian fw 190 combat over dieppe. Johnnie Johnson was given his first command, No. 610 Squadron, in July 1942. During the Dieppe raid, he flew four sorties, got one enemy fighter and shared another. This sortie almost proved to be his last as he was set upon by a FW 190 with Italian markings. Forbidden to fly below 2,000 feet (ships had been ordered to fire upon anything below this altitude) Johnnie dove and pulled out just above the ships masts. Anti-aircraft fire was intense but he pulled out unscathed. How the Italian FW 190 fared he never knew. text from http://www.wings-fine-arts.com/johnniejohnson.htm apoligies in advance if it infringes any rules, mod's please delete text if necessary. cheers jerry |

Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
Hello all,
According to Johnnie Johnson, Spitfire Top Gun, part one, by Dilip Sarkar, page 39 Johnson flew Spitfire Vb, EP254, DW-B on 19 Aug 42. Regards Rob |
Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
The link, http://www.wings-fine-arts.com/johnniejohnson.htm
is most interesting. However, J.E. Johnson was NOT the leading Allied Ace of WWII, several USSR aces exceeding that score (they were "allies" back then), to say nothing of Richard Bong with 40. |
Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
Hi,
Just to confirm what has already been said, I have the details for 19 August 1942 from the 610 Sqdn ORB and Johnson's Combat Report, as follows: 07:40 - 09:10, Johnson flew Spitfire VB EP.254 -B, claiming one FW 190 destroyed, sharing an Me 109 destroyed with PO Smith and F/Sgt. Creagh, and damaging an FW 190. 11:20 - 12:55, Johnson flew Spitfire VB EP.254 -B, making no claims. 14:00 - 15:20, Johnson again flew Spitfire VB EP.254 -B, making no claims despite firing at two FW 190s from long range. Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
By the way, how likely is it that the italians actually flew a 190 over Dieppe ? Was it a misidentification by Johnnie Johnson ?

Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
Hi,
I has similar thoughts, but also wondered if it was actually an italian radial fighter which was mistaken for a FW 190, but I don't know much about italian fighters, maybe a visiting a/c from the med ? however something on the 190 must have made him think that it was carrying italian markings. cheers Jerry |
Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe
Well, if I recall correctly, he mentions it was a very experienced pilot flying the "italian fw190". The chances of it being a german with weird markings or a white rudder of something are bigger than it being a good italian pilot imho. Surely the best italian pilots were used in other theatres of war.
