Posting eBay photos ?
Another objection has been posted, this time on the LEMB, about my posting links for active eBay auctions. I could post after auctions or not at all. Thoughts?
Ed |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Interesting discussion, perhaps even worth to take a poll on?
We've got the tooling to make this a community thing, why not use it? I know for a fact that many people enjoy your posts, I do not get many remarks to the opposite. So, to poll or not to poll that is my question. |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Ed:
Who is objecting and what are they objecting to? Surely not people saving them since they usually have marks, lettering, etc., that, commercially, a copy is worthless. What is their problem? |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Hi chaps...
I wasn't aware that there were other objections. Has there been debate on this elsewhere recently? As Ed should know by now, I personally love his posts and it has encouraged me to search too. However, with regards the LEMB, we've had mention from a picture collector that making images/links available whilst an auction is still live means that the £££ gets inflated. To a degree, I can see his point. I can also see that putting a stop to these posts both here, on the LEMB and elsewhere on the .net, it’s virtually impossible. Like Ruy, I'm considering putting the LEMB policy to a vote although I can see some mileage in ensuring that only finished auction links are posted... Kind regards Peter D Evans LEMB Administrator |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Like John, I would wonder who could object to those listings. They've been great.
Wouldn't think the sellers would mind the greater exposure. Look at how the prices have gone up over the last year or two. I'd guess it would be a no-brainer to say that that exposure has contributed to those higher prices. |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Hi Ed;
I really don't understand the objection. You are not posting state secrets. This is information that is available to all. Does anyone seriously feel that Sudek13 or any of the other #@$@%#s that run the prices through the roof somehow would go home with their tails between their legs if you stopped posting these links? I mean, no offense Ed, but you do miss a few. And from my experience, whether you or anyone else posts these links or not does not seem to affect prices one iota. Lets say you stop posting the links. That just means that we are all going to have to duplicate your efforts, and so a lot of time is wasted by people duplicating each others efforts. By the same rationale, perhaps we should petition Google to stop providing a search engine because people can access information in a single place rather than having to do lengthy searches on their own? Hey, maybe we should petition eBay to stop providing a search facility on their site at well - that also makes it too easy to find those aircraft photo auctions! This is just plain silly. Ed, I for one thank you for your efforts. By your act of sharing your labors, you have saved me time and energy that I would expend duplicating your efforts. You are not the only reason I see these auctions and get to experience a little of this, you have just made things EASIER for me, and for that I am grateful. But the bottom line is, you have not showed me anything I would not have otherwise seen, you have just make my life easier. There are a certain percentage of hysterics and idiots in any group, and you have to anticipate that someone will always come up with a complaint, even if they have to make it up as they go along. Continue your fine efforts. Don't wait until after the auctions end, because more than a few of these people immediately pull the pictures, and there will be nothing left to see. And don't sweat the whiners....... Paul |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Ed, this is a bunch of H-S*!#. Someone is just trying, for whatever reason, to intimidate you. Just ignore the jerks and keep on doing your great service!!!
|
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Agree with John. All of this discussion is nonsense,. Ed, your post are precious because they are informations about where to see interesting historical images which, by the way, have been posted publicly.
Please continue your great work for the community and if some jerk has enough money to spend it to win auctions as well as time to complain, well, I'm not moved if he should spend some dollars more... Thanks for your work... and continue it. http://www.150gct.it/modules/Forums/...s/thumbsup.gif |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Yes Ed,
Keep up the excellent work, I don't think that your posts would have that much effect on prices anyway. I for one can usually extract the info I want from the eBay listing illustrations anyway! Ruy, I wouldn't bother doing a poll, if people don't agree with the posts they don't have to look and neither Ed nor the board get any financial benefit from them. Maybe we should stop people posting book reviews or lists of books for sale, etc etc! Kind regards, David |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Hi Ed,
I understand that someone can be a little bit angry when he found a photo he wants to bid for and thanks to your link there are more bidding people then can be without your link... It is the black side... On the other hand it is great service for us who has no time to search the ebay so often. In my case you help me to find some very interesting photos (some of which I was able to get, some of them I was overbidded by our common friend with lucky 13:-) Also there are so many photos I am not interesting to bid for but it is sometimes useful for me to see them and it also can be useful for any research - just to see the photo or to know that there is any photo like this or of this plane in this area. It is the white side. So from my point of view your link are really great thing and help for us and we can be glad to have them on this forum! I will be glad if you will keep doing. Pavel |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Hello,
Ed's postings on this site are in no way responsable for the high prices that photos reach on eBay... if Ed's wouldn't post links to running auctions Sudek13 or any other buyers would find them anyway... Are you really thinking that if Ed would stop posting you'd get photos cheapper? :-) dream on :-) |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Keep posting ED! Don't listen to the fools with small bank accounts. It isn't your fault.
Regards, Mike |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Hi All,
I am the "jerk"and "#@$@%#s" who started all this. I am very disappointed that many of you didn't bother to take a look at my posting at the LEMB http://www.luftwaffe-experten.org/fo...showtopic=2617 beore commenting. Especially Paul (pstrany) disappointed me. He must know better. I didn't complain about the postings of Ed West. In fact I really appreciate his efforts ! I only politedly asked the members of the LEMB not to post links and pictures of active auctions on Ebay.de of rare German Beuteflugzeuge. But as stated in my latest posting at the LEMB I realise that what I asked for is impossible. So let's end this discussion and Ed, please continue your efforts. Kind Regards, Jan |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Jan,
This is what you posted: "If you come across auctions on Ebay with rare types of Beutelugzeuge and you don't intend to buy the photo yourself, please don't post the photo on this board and give a link to the auction untill the auction is over." Your request is unreasonable, because the internet is a democratic vehicle, and people are free to post whatever they wish. If you don't win a photo, then in basic Englilsh parlance, 'Tough shit'. Remember, sudek 13 only ever pays 1 Euro more than the next-highest bidder, and I know as much as anybody, as I have lost out many times. Get over it! This board is visited by many people and drawing attention to certain auctions will rise prices to the sky. |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
I must agree with everyone on the board and beseech Ed to keep on posting.
If it wasn't for Ed West, the chances of viewing these rare LW/Allied photos for the average enthusiast would be nil. Even if some collector decides to let them be published in a book, the long lag time for publication means that I'll be collecting Social Security by then. Don't stop, don't stop, ad infinitum... Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Hi John,
I believe I remember you from the old AAW board. Weren't you the one with the guitars ? You completely missed my point. I already stated that what I asked for is impossible and I want to end this discussion. Everybody knows by now that Sudek13, one of the richest men on the earth, has the capacity to buy any photo he wants. But that is what it is all about. Just bring a certain photo to the attention of Sudek13 and all of his helpers (associates/staff) and none of us will be able to purchase this photo and no one will see this photo again in the near future. As I understand from a close friend of Sudek13 he is building up a database of photo's of WW2 related photo's (not only planes) for future publications. But will we be seeing them published in our lifetime ?? So showing the previews of Ebay auctions will most likely be the only way to view these photo's for a long time. As said, please Ed, keep posting. Kind Regards, Jan |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Simply - thank you, Ed.
Keep them coming as long as you find it worth your effort and time Most Appreciative, Bill Marshall |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Thank you everyone. I will continue. I just like to know what everyone thinks. Thank you for your kind words.
Best regards, Ed West |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
To make every thing start again
who has seen the stuka with cannons without wheels (its a little picture but clearly vissible) its on the net for a few days! happy hunting Peter van Gogh |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Ed,
You have my vote. Keep posting and who cares what others think. You've been at this for a long time and it certainly benefits us all and I think, at least I do, "we" appreciate your time and effort in collecting this data for our enjoyment. Carry on... Stephen |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Life is not fair, but it is fairer than death.
Screw 'em. Ed, keep on posting, so the rest of us can see what is out there. One may never be able to own a Rembrandt, but that does not mean one should be denied a picture of one of his painting that is up for auction. If someone wantsd to find all the images in the world, and has the funds/staff to do so, your postings will not make a difference anyway. I look forward each time I log in to seeing your posts. |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
It would have been really fair if certain comments here have been posted only after reading the debate at LEMB.
|
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Jan,
Yeah, I'm the one with the interest in guitars (Gibsons, definitely not Fenders!). As others have said, better to see these photos, rather than not at all. We all have to accept that some people can bid higher than others. But isn't that the case with all auctions, such as those in the great auction houses around the world. That's why paintings by van Gogh sell for upwards of $16 million - people with big money can afford to bid on them. That's life, and we just have to accept it. But remember, new photos are surfacing in books all the time... |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Yes, I read the LEMB post and here is what I took to be the basis of this issue.
"I only politedly asked the members of this board not to bring to everyone's attention certain rare pictures of planes captured and used by the Germans. Maybe I had to add that asking for identifying the plane in question is the real problem." Now, how does Ed determine whether a certain picture is "rare". Should he clear it with Jan first? As for me, I would not know if it was rare or not. Even with a good meat thermometer;) |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Modeldad Steven,
you know me from the Airwarfare Board and you must know I share a lot of my original photo's with the airminded community. Why don't certain members of this board read postings thoroughly ? This debate has no purpose. There have never been an issue. After my initial posting at the LEMB I realised that what I was asking for (read carefully), "asking" and not demanding, is impossible. Nobody can know for certain if a specific photo is unique and very rare if he isn't specialised in that specific subject. Thank you Boris for standing up for me. Btw, unfortunately I am not one of those millionairs who can afford to buy any photo he wants. I have worked for 42 years to earn the money to buy the photo's I want. So don't post replies painting me off as the "bad guy" because I never intended to stop Ed's postings of Ebay-auctions and only posted a message on the LEMB board of which I later realised I shouldn't have posted it, because it was unreal and I already stated Ed West is doing a good job for the airminded community. Regards, Jan |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Enh, I don't mind at all the posting of the links to the pics;
I can see the side that is upset because it drives up the price, because these items are indeed sometimes rare and everyone likes a good deal.... but on the other hand, how can you know they exist without Ed combing Ebay looking for them? I found a nice set of Walter Oesau pics for sale on a similar site - and I got a wedding picture of them in the group - apparently was a collection from his late mother - included a hand-made card from Walter to his mother on Mother's day, and some of his wonderfully indecipherable handwriting on the back of a card. (Which the gent was kind enough to send me a larger scan of, which, if permitted, I can post on another thread) But it was out of my range, at nearly $2000. Blergh. My point/opinion? Please, Ed, continue to post them. There are some real gems in there that perhaps one day I will be able to afford, and I'm terminally lazy in searching for them on EvilBay. :D On other forums I belonged to, posting of items for sale was Verboten, unless there was a forum specifically for it. Perhaps that would be a solution? |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
I think that we must only thank Ed West for his work.
Without his research we often should lost rare or simply interesting pics. Francesco Maria Lentini PS: who is Sudek 13, a novel Howard Hughes ? |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
I wonder why there is no answer to this question,is this such a secret?
|
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
If you mean who is Sudek13, yes this is such a secret.
Sudek13 hides his identity carefully. When you try to contact him you will only become in contact with one of the many associates/helpers/staff of him. He is one of the wealthiest men on the earth. So forget it when Sudek13 wants a photo. You will almost every time loose. I am able to contact him, but only with the intervention of another multi-millionair, who knows Sudek13 personally. All this providing he is willing to send my message to Sudek13. As I will be meeting with the person I mentioned in the next week I will ask him if he will contact Sudek13 about the question if Sudek13's photo's (which are countless at this time) will be available to persons with small budgets for publications. Regards, Jan |
Re: Posting eBay photos ?
Talk about humor... sounds like someone was just whining to me. ;) Understandable, especially with good 'ole Sudek in the mix. But at least the light has broken through and errs in thinking have been corrected...
Keep 'em coming Ed. Your posts have saved me a bit of time and they are much appreciated from this quarter... Fade to Black... |
