Photos USN Interwar
Hello,
As there appear to be some forumite's here interested in USN aircraft here a a small series of ebay photos of US aircraft. Some of which are/may be army machines.Sorry outside my area of interest. So here's a definite Navy machine,a Consolidated P2Y Ranger, I think https://www.ebay.com/itm/38689154318...wAAOSwHvhmBboE The others are here. It looks as though the seller is posting a few each day,so may be worth checking back. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr...+photo&_sop=10 Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Yes, that's a Consolidated P2Y-1 of VP-10F. The squadron flew its aircraft from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor in January 1934 so the photo is probably from 1934/5. The flight took just over 24 hours for the 2400 miles.

Re: Photos USN Interwar
Thanks for the confirmation George. Following your reply, I looked for a little more information on the P2Y-1. The US Naval Institute site
https://www.usni.org/magazines/naval...oat-progenitor states that the P2Y-1J supplied to Japan was used as a transport in WW.II. A bit of a surprise I must admit. Can anyone confirm this? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a further photo of a line of what are presumably P2Y-1 of VP-10F at Acapulco. https://www.ebay.com/itm/13501028930...Bk9SR9aH4fLXYw Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Imagine sending a postcard without dating it!
The photo may have taken in October/November 1933 when VP-10F transferred from Panama to San Diego. |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Some further details:
On the flight from Panama to San Diego in 1933 the P2Ys of VP-10 spent the night of October 7/8 at Acapulco. The ship in the background of the photo is the seaplane tender USS Wright. |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Thanks George for both replies.
Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Hello,
Currrently on ebay is a photo of a Consolidated N2Y-1 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/116154682...Bk9SR6ipspHgYw The seller states that the aircraft is at NAS San Diego as are a series of photos of other USN aircraft which can be found here https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_d...+diego&_sop=10 Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Clint,
Thanks for locating that interesting San Diego collection. One shot in particular which caught my eye was the Curtiss BF2C from VB-5B with the fabric missing from the wings. This aircraft was BuNo 9592 which suffered the indignity of being "winged" by a careless sentry with a Very pistol. Not only did the fabric burn off but the structure was so distorted that the aircraft was deemed beyond repair. The date was 17 August 1935. |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Hello,
A couple of USN aircraft photos in a collection largely consisting of ships can be seen on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/387069840419 Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Thanks for finding those two rare floatplane photos. Based on Bill Larkins' writings it appears that they were from VS-6B, assigned to a cruiser division in the US Battle Fleet. Two of the cruisers whose names appear on the aircraft in the photos were Milwaukee and Cincinnati, the others being Concord and Omaha.
One of the aircraft, 6-S-3, has a visible BuNo, identifying it as Vought O3U-1 A-8817. This was attached to Milwaukee in 1932/33, thus giving a time frame for the photo. |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Thanks George,
The information you provide certainly adds to the interest of the photos and is certainly information I couldn't provide. I appreciate your expertise. Regards, Clint |

Hello,
Currently on ebay are a small number of photos of USN aircraft, the Sikorsky is a nice shot, though a little more in focus would have been nice https://www.ebay.com/itm/13518241341...Bk9SR7yZ2LalZA Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a nice photo of a Marine Corps DH.4 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226280648...Bk9SR_DLxdSnZA Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Clint,
That aircraft, A-6904, is a Boeing O2B-1 of VO-10M, based at Tientsin, China in 1927/8. The O2B was a development of the DH-4 with a welded steel tube fuselage and improved landing gear. A-6904 was stricken in August 1928 on account of "deterioration". |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Hi George,
Thanks for the correct id and details. Here hopefully is a correctly captioned Grumman F3F https://www.ebay.com/itm/11628597136...Bk9SR4KZ6o2oZA From the same seller several photos all captioned as probably taken at San Diego, predominently, but not only BF2C https://www.ebay.com/itm/11628597136...Bk9SR4KZ6o2oZA Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USN Interwar
Clint,
The Grumman biplane is an F2F-1 from VF-2B, assigned to USS Lexington. My best guess at the serial number is 9638 and the photo probably dates from 1935/37. Those aircraft to the left are Curtiss BFC-2s from VB-2B, assigned to Saratoga. |
