An interesting pilot having been a member of the pre-war aerobatics team, JG 3 then JG 2. He moved to the USA after the war and when I contacted his family, they knew little of his wartime exploits

Yes indeed, must have been one of Hanns Truebenbach's guys with the Kunstflugstaffel. Also an acquaintance of my uncle with JG3.

Hello Leo,
according to JFV Vol. 15/II technical defects were the reason of the emergency landing, in German "Notlandung infolge technischer Mängel". Regards Leo |

Hi guys
Many thanks to all who have responded regarding this pilot who indeed had a quite interesting career. I was some what surprised when I came across some evidence that suggested that he died in the USA but it now appears that was indeed the case. Horrido! Leo |

In order to become a US citizen after World War II, one of the requirements for a German WWII veteran was to serve in the US military especially the US Army. So I think Josef Heinzeller had serve in the US military for many years. Just a thought.

Leutnant Josef Heinzeller - 30 May 1944
Hi guys
I too am interested in how this fellow ended up in the USA and what he did there. I haven't found much but from some online sources regarding his daughter Annelies some information can be gleaned. Apparently, she was born on 10 May 1945 and emigrated to the USA in 1955. I was lucky enough to find an online archive of The Catholic World in Pictures issue of 12 September 1955 which has a photo of two girls with the following caption: Life is just grand for Christl and Annelies Heinzeller, who landed in New York City aboard the U. S. S. General Langfitt. Born in Austria, the Freedom Twins were among 1,210 expellees of German descent who will make new homes in the United States. The girls will live with their parents temporarily at the rectory of Monsignor George E. Murdock, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church, in Mt. Vernon, N. Y. (NC Photos) So it can be inferred that the family arrived to the USA in September 1955 and were refugees. The search continues ... Horrido! Leo |
