Focke-Wulf Fw 58 - any pilots ?
Good evening,
the Focke-Wulf Fw 58 was mainly a trainer but it was also used as transport, recon plane, for night harassment and as support for sea rescue planes. Kurt Tank had a close call when he encountered Spitfires in a Fw 58 in 1941. Has anybody of you ever come across a military pilot who used the Fw 58 operationally ? Cheers, Michael |
Re: Focke-Wulf Fw 58 - any pilots ?
according to wiki 30 Fw 58s were used for spraying for disease on the Eastern front. They might of done some spraying around Hitler's HQ at Wolf's Lair while he was gone the mosquitos i understand were really bad there.

Hello James,
it's astonishing what they were occupied with during wartime. Do you think this was a clandestine training for chemical warfare ? Cheers, Michael |
Re: Focke-Wulf Fw 58 - any pilots ?
The Fw-58s were part of the Fliegerforstschutzverband (later E Kdo 40 and E Kdo 41) tasked with Forest protection and (among more) anti-malarial spraying in Germany and several occupied countries. Leendert

I don't think it was clandestine training for chemical warfare. Disease was a problem in Eastern Europe and the Germans and the Allies as I understand it sprayed for malaria ect.

Is this still a problem nowadays?

Good evening Gabor
I like assigning aircraft types to notable pilots so much. Has any of these Hungarian pilots achieved any military success in in the fw 58? Cheers, Michael |
Re: Focke-Wulf Fw 58 - any pilots ?
Some were Bf 109 pilots flying them for transport runs after ferry flights, etc. Many of these Fw 58s are known in details. Unarmed Fw 58C, 'K.3+34' eg. was shot down by George E. Hochstetler (P-38L, 15 AF, 14 FG, 49 FS) on March 22, 1945 at Kemenesmagasi, Hungary with Bf 109 ace pilot, Málnássy Ferenc hdgy. (KIA), Benárd László hdgy. (KIA), Török Lajos zls. (WIA), Kárpáthy István őrm. (WIA). Or Fw 58 KA-6, Gy.sz.: 51022, 'G.2+68' was self-destructed on the airfield of Lesvár/Röjtökmuzsaj by its crew on March 28, 1945, etc.

True, my uncle had plenty of 'seat time' on this type, but only for courier or overland flights.
