Performance, clean up and the future.

Working to resolve the issues - short term and long term.

Short term, clean up, optimization and shifting some of the load from the database to the files system.

Also asked service provider why they are limiting / throttling the database at 50% of the documented maximum size.

Long term, friends of the forum are looking into migrating and upgrading the forum - which is a good thing for support, features and most importantly new members etc.

Right now we should have some good performance at least until the next step.

Regards,

Ruy

I would like to reduce the maximum number of stored private messages.
Right now it is set at 50, I would like to reduce this to 25

If you have any PM that you would like to save please do so.

Re: Performance, clean up and the future.

OK after last week's false start we try again.

What we have done:

1. reduced the size of the database by emptying certain tables
2. reduced the size of the database by moving some of the data to the file space
3. changed some forum settings
4. limited guest access (due to high guest activity)
5. removed domain forwarding to refresh DNS (more than 48hrs)
6. removed sub domain forum
7. reinstated subdomain forum
8. reinstated domain forwarding

Right now performance is very fast, BUT we have to see how it develops the next 48 hours. If stable we can look at maybe reinstating some of the guest settings - will also align with Jagan (who is helping us).

That's it, nothing more to share. I hope you all have a nice weekend.

EDIT: It is incredible that after only 5 minutes we have 1200 guests active. These must be mostly bots (AI etc) that are gathering data. Let's see how limiting the access helps to maintain our performance.

Thanks Ruy for all what have done lately, but also during all these years. Right now the forum is saying there are 4 members connected.... and 448 guests (bots). I am missing the pre-IA world....

Bots? Really? How do you know that? Where I work, we have added cloudflare verification to cut down on actual bots.

Re: Performance, clean up and the future.

As some of you may have noticed we had another forwarding issue.

I've made some minor changes (performance related settings, removal of more redundant files).

Also I have used Google AI (yes) to help me with some basics - I've used the input to try something else. At the moment it seems to be working so fingers crossed that this will resolve the error 500 issue with the domain forwarding.

Re: Performance, clean up and the future.

Maybe you have encountered some additional issues, I was trying to move another process to the filesystem, but could not make it work.

Other than that forwarding seems to be working correctly correctly.
Performance seems to be very fast as well.

unfortunately after half a day of good performance the http 500 error came back

Re: Performance, clean up and the future.

OK - resolved again, made some small changes to the .htaccess file which should resolve the internal forwarding. If this fails I will contact the provider again to ask for their support.

At least right now performance and forwarding seem to work flawlessly.

Your time and effort are greatly appreciated, Ruy. Please remember that you have a standing offer to help with any expenses that you incur.

This site has performed amazingly well for a very, very long time. It's a joy that its collective knowledge is still accessible, and that it's still frequented by many valued members of the Luftwaffe community. Long may it so remain.

Thanks and regards,
Leon Venter

Re: Performance, clean up and the future.

Hi Leon,

Appreciate the kind words and offer.

Right now Jagan is testing upgrade scenarios, once we get a better understanding of our options we can start planning.

I’m optimistic that we will find a solution that will refresh the forum and the community.

Regards,

Ruy
