The other books by the author are all over the place. A bad sign.

Oi, that's certainly an eccentric collection of persons to write about; I mean, Hartmann and Barkhorn but Magellan, Wallenberg, Miyamoto Mushashi and 'Flo-Jo'?

I wonder if he ever spoke to Barkhorn

Re: New gerhard barkhorn book

Why such a bad cover? Why not a real photograph of Barkhorn instead of this non-sense airman without a LW Eagle on the uniform who not here or on Mars looks like Barkhorn. If someone passed his eyes throughout the contents, please do give us a review.

You have another one with Hartmann. Same bullshit.

Re: New gerhard barkhorn book

I would like to know if there is any new information about (or from) Barkhorn. I am not going to waste money on a book that just is a rewrite of the same old trivia.

I worked under Barkhorn in the late 60'ies and was quite impressed by him. He was a no nonsense officer who dared to think along new lines. He showed up in an old orange pilot suit the first time I saw him. Everybody thought that he was just an old Oberfeldwebel and ignored him which gave him a chance to see how his new unit worked.

Yikes! I bet they were surprised when they found out who he was.

Guess I'll stick to the one I have: "Das vergessene As" written by Bernd Barbas and published by Luftverlag Start.

Is this one of these AI-produced books and yes cover is dreadful

Re: New gerhard barkhorn book

Guess it is AI work. There is a writer called Andrew Witt, but he is an art historian rather than someone who will write biographies of military people.

Re: New gerhard barkhorn book

..I've scanned some text and asked AI to do a stylistic analysis. This tends to suggest that the text is "AI-assisted" but not necessarily "AI-generated". Full report in the usual place. What struck me the most about it (..as a human..) was the highly polished (albeit generic) phrasing and constant repetition. And while the writing appears 'authoritative' it lacks any real detail. Very few specific incidents feature - 31 May 1944 being an exception. I've compared Witt's book with Don Hollway's 2012 "Aviation History" biography and Christophe Cony's lengthy bio in "Avions" (issue 176) along with other online texts but have found no evidence of 'source' material used. The book is 175 pages (the chapter 'Starting Over' is p124) and has no images or bibliography - but there are six blank empty pages at the back!

Quick and easy. I can "write" or not write a book with the assistance of a program called AI. Which, by the way, is a pattern recognition program that will provide a text arrangement that suits the request. Thank you Neil for your comments.

Thanks for the replies.
I can safely take it off my want list!
