KTB of KGrzbV 5 online ;)

Hello all, I've uploaded my transcription of microfilmed handwritten war diary of K.Gr.z.b.V. 5 to following address:
http://www.mizsio.pl/kriegstagebuecher/

Was a lot of typing, and while the source is in kind of script there may be errors - hopefully not too much :)

regards,
Pawel

Hi Pawel

May I be the first to thank you for all your efforts on bringing this very important KTB info to the general group of researchers and anyone else interested in this field.

For myself it is invaluable for my research into W/nrs/Stkz and adding anything useful to known losses. Sometimes I have losses but no Stkz to go with them. I have Stkz but no Unit info for these. This info is invaluable

So thanks.

If there is anything that I can add/correct I will get back to you

Regards

Tom Willis

Pawel,

Very much appreciated. Can this thread be made a sticky or whatever so as it is not lost?

I wonder if anybody here have access to German publication from 1943 entitled 'Kampfgruppe Scherer - 105 Tage Eingeschlossen'. It contains some rather interesting Luftwaffe-related information incl. photos of Versorgungsbomben and a sketch of Abwurfplatzes. Think I could attach scans to the webpage that would be a nice illustration for part of the KTB.

Pawel

Glad it wasn't in vain :) I'll be putting some additional stuff from the so called Gruppenchronik of K.Gr.z.b.V. 5 aka I./K.G. 55 next week with some documents dating from 1942 to August 1944.

Pawel

Hi Pawel,

Thank you for this excellent work !! This is very impressive work and brings me closer towards completing one of my projects.

I am currently working as a co-author on a book on Cholm, i am working on the Luftwaffe part (Trasnporter/Glider/Bomber, etc ...) and this info is once again a very nice piece of the puzzle.

Feel free to contact me for further information.

Cordial greetings,

Another part of KTB Nr. 4 done and uploaded.
One interesting thing I noticed, ist that - judging from the way city names in the Ukraine are written in the diary - German airmen must have been using Polish maps of the period ...nothing strange with this actually. Also I tried to match the names in KTB with present names in intl. notation, they're given in italic script.

An entry from 1.8.41 -
Eigene Jäger rechtzeitig zur Stelle. 12.45 wurde eine Rata beobachtet die in etwa 1500 m nach Angriff durch Me 109 senkrecht zu Boden stürzte.

Could this be the claim made by Walther Dahl, I-16 over Kiew at 1300 hrs?

Another part of KTB Nr. 4 posted. This part covers few operations of III./55 detachment against Moscow in late July 1941 flown from Borisow airfield (Barysau, NE from Minsk) in Belarus. This is interesting as it actually should have been flown from Bojary (Bajary) airstrip.

Pawel

Re: KTB of KGrzbV 5 online ;)

Many years ago I found a reference to a "Versuchskommando fuer Panzerkampfung" formed at Rechlin. The reference noted that during April 1943 the unit moved to the Eastern Front to test its cannon-armed Ju 87s, Hs 129s, Ju 88s, and Bf 110Gs under operational conditions. Although the Ju 87s and Hs 129s were not considered particularly effective, the Ju 88s and Bf 110G-2/R1s were found to be totally inadequate. When the unit was disbanded on 17 June 1943, the Bf 110 G-2/R1s were designated as Pz.Jg.St. 110 under I./ZG 1.

I'm uncertain of the fate of the other a/c, although it appears that the Ju 87s were moved to St.G. 2. And the dates are interesting. Perhaps the unit was disbanded a month earlier than stated in my reference. That would align things perfectly for the disbandment of one unit, and the redesignation to the other.

As I printed out the KTB for Stuka 2, I found that only the first 5 pages of Part 1 would print -- to 3.5.43 -- at that point on the printout there is a "next part" and it stops printing.

As I noted in an earlier note, thank you for all your work in preparing and presenting this material to the rest of us.

All the best,
George Hopp

Re: KTB of KGrzbV 5 online ;)

George, I am a bit in the dark as far as Ju 87 Panzerjäger during summer months of 1943 are concerned. There is no doubt that Versuchsstaffel für Panzerbekämpfung aka V.f.P. existed within Stuka 2.
The only hint that there was other such Ju 87-Staffel operational in Russia is loss report from 14-July-1943 for Ju 87G of Pz.Jagdstaffel of St.G. 1 - but between 14 and 16 July 1943 Stuka 2 units (without II./2) were transferred for about two weeks to Lfl. 6 (to Orel via Konotop), Panzerjagdstaffel was probably transferred as well - so this may be an error in loss report.

As for printout, can send you entire file in word if there are troubles with printing.

regards,
Pawel

It sounds like that Versuchskommando lasted for only a bit more than a month and then the a/c were either returned to Germany or redesignated into other units, in the case of the Ju 87s, into St.G. 2. So, I am agreeing with you in this matter.

If it would be possible, yes, I would appreciate getting the Word doc. for that part of the KTB. Thank you.

George
