Hi Mikhail,
Congratulations on the book. Any prospect of an English language version? Best Regards Andy Fletcher |

Who are the authors? Is this THE book, which is reportedly under works for more than ten years now? If yes, then it's a must for all Eastern Front enthusiasts... Does it have the information listed in tabular form, so even non Russian language speakers can find their way through? |

Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
S!
At least I found it in my bookstore! :) 380 RUB :) Will bye it as soon as possible! Interesting things mentioned: Not mentioned Boris Kovzan (AFAIK 28 vic.) - the only pilots who made 4 tarans (ramms)... Again - THANKS Mikhail for this book! |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
4 'tarans' (ramming attacks) are the ONLY Kovzan's personal kills. This pilot was very brave man, but bad shooter... Exept 4 'tarans' Kovzan had 3 shared air victories, so his GPW total score is 4+3.

Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
LOL I read a book about him...
Could You share the dates of thees ramms pls? AFAIK Ju88, Bf110 (Tula region), Bf109, Bf109 (Velikiye Luki or something)... Very interesting, but I gave that book to somebody and cant find it back. |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Mikhail,
Do you have any suggestions on how to obtain the book from outside Russia? Will any Western bookstores carry it (with the possibility of being able to pay for it with a credit card)? Or is there someplace one could send cash in an envelope (US$, Euros, or Pounds Sterling would be the major currencies I would think)? I am looking forward to seeing all three volumes. Frank. |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
I just received my copy, bought via books.ru
It's a thick book, with 730 numbered pages. Very nice reading, with lots of names and obviously even more victories listed. Well done, Mr. Bâkov! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the VVS, and not only (even if you cannot read Russian). P.S. I was looking, for example, for Lt. Boris Maslov of 96 OIAE (in 1941), but couldn't find him, although he did claim several victories. Is anyone from this little known independent naval squadron included in the book? |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Dénes,
This is volume one of three. It covers only Army aces with 10 or more victories. Volume two will cover Army aces with 5-9 victories. And volume 3 will cover the Naval aces. Frank. |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
for those of you that have the book...
does it have anything on Lydia Litvyak ? depending on what sources you have she may be listed with as few as 8 kills and as many as 12. if it does I may look into getting it. that could be difficult here in the USA |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Mikhail, in general - does the available records also give the daytime of the combat/claim? My field of interest is battle of Kursk and it would be very hard to match Luftwaffe casualties (in many cases the daytime would be known) and VVS claims, without knowing the time of the combat from Russian side...
kind regards, Pawel |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
The sample pages that were shown at the beginning of the thread on the website didn't have the times just date, a/c type and location. Owl-99 did tell me that they were looking into the possible english translation awhile back. The mission times for claims and loss of the ace would be helpful.

Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
I was just wondering if this would be possible at all to know the daytimes, that is, if there was a standard to record such details in units files.

Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
kurlannaiskos,
There are (at least) two Russian language bookstores in the US (both in Brooklyn, in fact) that carry the book. kniga.com lists the book at http://www.kniga.com/books/product.a...9&dept_id=1122 and ruskniga.com at http://www.ruskniga.com/sell.asp/Ite...ry/Books/sc/35 The price is about the same at both of them. Both take credit cards. Both have 800 numbers for use in the US and Canada; at the top of the page for kniga.com, and the very bottom for ruskniga. Neither can handle ISBNs. Both speak Russian and English, but unless you know Russian or can pronounce the title of the book, kniga.com may be hard to deal with; ruskniga might be easier to order from, since they show a product number (B55670). Enjoy! Frank. |

Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Thank You Frank, I did not know about either bookstore as I've never been to the city.
(that's cute as kniga is book in Russian) also Thank You Denes,as the authors could probably not confirm 10 kills she probably did not qualify. as the top scoring (however few...) Female pilot of the war I believe she deserves special mention, even if not in this book. |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Litvyak's story was discussed here earlier (and maybe not just once)
Check Mikhail's page: http://www.avia-hobby.ru/publ/sovaces/10_l.html Her confirmed successes are 4 individual and 3 shared victories. Литвяк Лидия Владимировна 4 + 3 586, 437, 9 гв., 296>73 гв. + 1 аэр.; {?} 11 + 3 |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Mikhail Bykov has a revised version of his book coming out and co-authored by V.A. Anokhin. It seems to be in Russian only again but will cover all the Soviet fighter aces (WW2 against the German and the Japanese. Also the Korean War.) The title "Все Истребительные Авиаполки Сталина. Первая Полная". It consists of 944 pages but has only 1500 prints.

Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Nokose,
I have a copy of the book you reference, obtained for me by Viktor Kulikov in Moscow. It is not a book about the aces. Rather it is short histories of all the fighter regiments (not sure if the naval units are present) going back to the late '30s, and extending to the '50s and the Korean War. A chronology, which seems to be about changes of assignment, and aircraft types. A list of commanders, with their dates. Various tables, whose headings I have not attempted to translate (my Russian is very poor, limited to transliterating Cyrillic, and a few obvious words). Occasional photos of commanders. I do not see a list of aces with each unit. ISBN 978-5-9955-0707-9. Published by ЯУЗА, Moscow, 2014. Enjoy! Frank. |
Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Frank, Thanks for the update as the information that I found only hinted the details as a revision. Still maybe the unit information is better then what is shown in www.allaces.ru.

Re: New Russian book: Soviet GPW Fighter Aces 1941-1945
Nokose,
Viktor Kulikov has informed me of another new book by Mikhail Bykov which I have ordered from him. It is titled Vse Asi Stalina 1936-1953. All Aces of Stalin. This is probably the book you were referencing earlier. The cover is similar in style to that of the Soviet fighter squadrons book I referenced above. The squadrons book is about the same size as Mikhail's second Soviet aces book, but twice as thick. I do not know what the page count of the new aces book is. Nor the ISBN. I went to www.ukazka.ru and searched for the book but it apparently won't/can't search on Latin characters, only Cyrillic. Enjoy! Frank. |

The new book "Vsje istrebitelnye aviapolki stalina" does include the Soviet Naval (VMF) Air Force fighter units. From page 806 to page 844 (GPW period). Cheers, Kari PS Bookshop Ruslania in Helsinki ( http://ruslania.com/ ) can deliver the Bykov books. Likely to all of Europe, too. Check their site. I've bought the fighter regiments and newer edition of aces book from there. |
