Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"
The Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe" as I've come to find out is a copy of my and George Morrison's database from 7-8 years ago, warts and all in Excel format. Please do not reward the unscrupulous jerk who is benefitting financially from our hard work. Unfortunately this guy has already sold 20+ copies -
Anybody who wants or needs proof, I suggest you look up any post where I've posted loss data and check the language syntax and general file layout - we've added several fields over time - date inserted in the middle and bruch %, H/F, Crew & Time at the end - most of you are already familiar with it. |

What a Crumb, For lack of being unable to swear tactfully!!!!!
Thanks for the heads up and I hope you are able to find a metheod of payback. I suggest you contact Peter at the LEMB, and post the same there IF OK BY HIM? I also think you may want to get your updated file copyrighted, and for sale quick advertised as so? Looks like a hot topic here with three pages of forum talk. |

Jim,
If you decide to sue for the theft of intellectual property then I will gladly contribute to the costs involved. |
Re: Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"
Good catch Jim!
Some further info - back circa 2002 - 03 Melvin Brownless was circulating letters with the heading of ' The Remembrance Society' and claimed to be a registered UK charity which was quite interesting as there was no registration number given and no trace of a Melvin Brownless (or Melvin Brown as he sometimes goes by) or a UK charitable organisation containing the word Remembrance in the title. Information given on the headed notepaper was as follows: The Remembrance Society Melvin Brownless 60 Springfields Padbury Bucks UK email: jager2uk@yahoo.ie No phone number was given and he's hard to track down because he keeps disappearing and reappearing at odd times. I hope that you do decide to chase him down (and make a formal complaint to eBay). It's people like him that ruin it for everybody else!! Regards Dave |

I tried that, but I have to register and activate am account (which I don't really want to do) at which point, since the activation button points back at E-Bay USA, my company's Surf Control kicks in and blocks me. Anyone know another way to reach these guys? |
Re: Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"
Gentlemen, thank you for the support - fortunately wherever this joker got the copy of the database he pirated, it is so old, poorly formatted and so full of holes as to be relatively worthless compared to the current product.
What really chafes of course is that this a-hole has made money off of this, claiming it as his own work - and even having the brass to mock Frank O. and others because they couldn't find things like date. |
Re: Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"

Re: Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"
The real question is: How can we prevent this from happening again?
I'm always cautious when individuals offer their "database info" or "research" for monetary rewards. I even view those who frequently visit this board suggesting to share their information for a reward or to a select few "members" with a great deal of scepticism. What are their true intensions? Lets find the "imposter" and snoke him out!!!! Norbert Anything I can do to assist, let me know. |
Re: Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"
Hello, Norbert
I guess I am one of the individuals you refer to, as I have offered to share my web-based information or database if you want to refer to it as such. It is not easy to write a few sentences here to describe my 'intentions', but I would like to explain a bit about what I have been doing and why I would like to have a bit of control with regards to who gets access to the information me and my friends have collected. Firstly, I think that especially Jim P. who also visits this site frequently can testify to the amount of time and monetary effort that goes into this process: 1. Gathering original information. You have to pay for copies of mikrofiche or microfilms, and other documents. 2. License fees. A database is necessary, which can be free or have a license fee, I have been using SQL Server, not free.... In order to get the information out on the net you have to either get a subscription with an ISP, or set up your own webserver. Again not free... 3. Entering the information. You and your friends use countless hours entering data into the database. 4. Programming the GUI. In order to get the stuff ut on the net, you will have to design a GUI for the database, for entering, and reading data etc. Again, hours and hours of work. My intention, as people that know me can tell you, has always been to have this kind of information easily available over the internet, searchable and indexed. The intention is to share it with people that have a real interest in the topic, and can be trusted not to compromise the data, steal it etc. The result would be a resource where all that are willing to participate would gain access to information in a structured way that one person alone would ot be able to process in a lifetime. Joint effort! The reason I have opted for a members scheme is in my opinion definitely shown by this and the others discussions concerning the same topic to be a way to go, as it proves that people can not be trusted not to steal for their own benefit. A membership scheme online, with the logging abilities at least I have on my system, would locate someone trying to steal fairly easily. I do not know why you seem to mistrust people like Jim P and myself Norbert, I think we both have proved over and over again our willingness to assist others in their research, not once (at least from me, and the same goes for Jim as far as I know) asking for any monetary reward (but very happy when others have offered to assist or share documents in their own collections in return). My membership scheme would not cost a lot, but as the willingness to pay even a small amount also show a willingness to contribute and a resonably serious attitude to the topic it might be a way to keep the freeloaders out. I have had questions regarding both payment (would it be able to pay less if I contribute more hours in adding information instead - answer YES!), and problems with not having a person to vouch for an applicants seriocity (problem solved by enrolling the member and monitoring activity, and willingness to share and contribute) The Luftwaffe Verband was a community that had a lot going for it in my opinion, but as it takes a lot of effort to keep such a project going, it eventually stopped. My project would be an online version of this, or at least that is the intention. Regards, Andreas Brekken |
Re: Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"
Jim,
I have just looked at buying a copy of that CD on e-bay and Googled the title to see some further details and found this forum. From what you are saying the first thing you need to do is contact e-bay and report the item number and tell them your position,I'm pretty sure they will at least remove it and stop him profiting any further. Go to the e-bay homepage and click site map, find Safety Centre, and click Report A Problem on the right hand side. You'll need to be a member of e-bay but if you are not already it doesn't take long. They are really tightening up on copys and counterfeits etc. Hope this helps! |
Re: Buyer Beware - Please do not buy Luftwaffe losses CD "Anglo-Deutsches Erinnerungs Gruppe"
Hi,
Information is rarely free, my own library/collection has cost thousands of pounds! I don't mind people using my information but it is nice to get some credit at times. A chap published a book in the 1990's and didn't tell me he was doing it, I found out when I saw a copy on a bookshop shelf. The book was 60% copied from my writings/research and included many of my photos and tables. No credit given whatsoever and the 'author', when confronted, said he forgot to tell me! Congratulations to the publisher however who took a hard line with him and actually sent me a payment as an apology. I am not at liberty to give you the title or the publisher however. The money paid for more research material, Therefore I have no problem with people making a charge for their information, it usually costs a heck of a lot less than getting it yourself. I don't mind sharing information with like minded individuals because I know that they will share theirs with me, as on this and other boards. Hopefully the information I give is of use to people! I bought one of those CDs before this thread began just to see what it was, but for a lot less money than some paid for it. I would much rather have paid it's true creator for it however!
