A-20 in USAF use at UK in Nov/Dec 1943
 

Hi All !

Does somebody have a list which USAF units
operated A-20's as early as Nov/Dec 1943
from UK airfields?

Specifically I would like to know, which bomb groups
did the following raid and what were the targets.

02.12.1943 Objectives south of Cherbourg bombed by 56 A-20 and Typhoon bombers.

are you sure those were USAAF units ?

the English flew the Boston, with 88, 107 and 342 Squadrons around that time, and it would make sense if they were with Typhoons ?

the 8th had some BGs of B-26s, which were later assigned to the IXth AF

which to correct my statement, the B-26s had already been transferred by this time

Dec 2nd, I show a small raid, 12 Mitchell IIs from 98 and 11 Boston IIIs from 88 Squadrons were out on a raid

I see a Tiffy making a claim and a Spit V making a claim for that day

but I am not that good at this sort of stuff

Neither the 9th nor the 8th Air Force flew on this date. These bombers were from RAF units.

IIRC A-20 units only joined the 9th AF in 1944. In 1943 USAAF used only B-26 as medium bombers from England.

there were 3 RAF Squadrons flying the Boston at this time, 88, 107 and 342

on Dec 2nd, I only see 88 showing it was out on a raid

Possibly 409 / 410 / 416 BG using A-20

409 didn't show up in England until Mar 44
410 didn't show up in England until April 44
416 didn't show up in England until Feb 44

so don't think any of them flew a major raid in Dec of 43

According to '2 Group RAF' on the 2nd December 1943 the following aircraft took part in Ramrod 111;

11x Boston (88 Sqn)
12x Mitchell (98 Sqn)
13x Boston (107 Sqn)
6x Mitchell (180 Sqn)

The target was Martinvast (south of Cherbourg).

Must have missed that on the web site, I only saw

'In 1943 they moved to the United Kingdom with their headquarters at R.A.F Burtonwood, England '

but then USA aircraft aren't my area.
