Operation Jubilee aircrew list

After many visits to TNA and working through the squadron ORB's please find attached a list of almost all of the RAF squadron aircrew who took part in missions in support of Operation Jubilee. The only exception are the nine aircrews for the Defiants of 'Defiant Flight, RAF Station Northolt'.

Any comments or corrections to names and any information on their subsequent fates will be most gratefully received.

Regards,

Steve Pegge

Steve:

I have the Northolt Ops Log at home so will have a look but I am not sure but didn't this unit become 515 Sqn so maybe you will have the answer there?

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Chris,

Thanks for that, I'd be interested to know if the Northolt Log has anything, the ORB for RAF Station Northolt was the only one I was unable to view (its presently with the AHB).

I've looked through the 515 Squadron ORB (the Defiant Flight's early days are detailed in it), but other than its commanding officer (A/S/Ldr Thomas-appointed 11/8/42) I wasn't able to identify any other aircrew.

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

First flight was 7 Aug 42 and their purpose was to feign a threat with 9 aircraft. No mention of Defiant Flt for 19 Aug. Still in existence Sep 42 (diversions to major operations) and then it m,entions 515 Sqn from Oct 42 onwards

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Michal,

Thanks for those. You're right about the losses, though I note that Sgt Liskutin was lucky return after the heavy damage suffered to his aircraft.

Comments;

1. I've got FO Hartman credited with just a Do217 0/0/1; initially he had claimed an 'Me110' damaged, but this was changed to a Do217 after the camera film had been studied.

2. I believe that 'Sgt Kohart' could be a typo for Sgt Josef Kohout, any ideas?

Quote:

Yes Liskutin´s EP559 received big damages when he forgot to watch own back during a fire on another Fw190. A time for his revenge occured some hours later ...

His CR mentions black Me 110, as well as the CR of No.310 Sqn.

Quote:

You are right. Sgt Josef Kohout was a member of the 312 Sqn from 11/6/42 to 15/5/43.

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Hi Steve

Back again with one more I believe it was S/Ldr E H P Wheller from 171Sqn.

I have really enjoyed perusing your list and will probably do some more! I am struck by at least two things.

The way you have arranged the list in order of rank gives a very powerful representation of the structure of the RAF, the shape of the pyramid in the RAF with nine pages of P/Offs and 12 pages of Sgts!

I am struck by the small number of Australians (17?). I wonder if it was simply the case that not so many Aussies had come through the pipeline by August 1942. However in my experience of poring over quite a few ORBs I have found that many ORBs do not clearly record where pilots were from the Commonwealth countries perhaps that may be a contributory factor.

You are going to have to write another book about Dieppe now.

Steve

Steve49 18th May 2007 20:35

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Steve,

Thanks for that additional name. As for the Australian aircrew, I'm sure that there were more involved, but as you say most ORB's aren't too detailed when it comes to identifying the nationalalities of the pilots. Hopefully an Australian expert out there could give me some more information?

Well I've been researching the operation for the past six years, so hopefully a book will arrive at the end, but I'll have to get some interest from a publisher first!

Thanks again,

Regards

Steve

A few comments.
S/L Jan Eugeniusz Ludwik Zumbach is missing from the list.
Skalski at the time was A/S/L, being promoted to S/L in 1943. I have had access to his personal files, so I could have check it, contrary to the other airmen on the list.
Sobanski of Polish nationality and citizenship was at the time with RCAF, later transferred to USAAF and KIA 6/6/1944.

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Franek,

Thanks for your comments; S/Ldr Zumbach is on the list as C/O of 303 Sqn, but I'll amend his rank as A/S/Ldr. I'll also note Sgt Sobanski's later death. Do you know what unit he was serving with at the time of his death?

A possible explanation for why there were few RAAF pilots in UK based RAF squadrons during August 1942....... Many experienced Australian fighter pilots had been recalled home earlier in the year to defend against the Japanese. Most were filtered into 75 & 76 Sqns RAAF and were fighting at Milne Bay in August. In June of the same year 452 & 457 Sqns had also been requested to return home and defend the Northern coastline eventually forming No.1 Spitfire Wing with 54 Sqn RAF. Meanwhile there were still three Australian manned fighter squadrons in the Middle East – 3 Sqn RAAF, 450 & 451 Sqs. During the Dieppe raids the sole remaining Australian equipped day-fighter unit in the UK was 453 Sqn which was in the process of ‘working up’. All these movements may help explain why there were relatively few Australians attached to RAF squadrons during Operation Jubilee.

regards, Drew

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Drew,

Thanks for those.

With regard to 453 Sqn, by default they did have a link to the Dieppe raid. It is noted in the ORB that due 'to the fact that a large number of the squadrons aircraft were lent to 222 Sqn for use at Dieppe' they carried out little flying between the 15th and 20th August. The loan aircraft (number not identified) were not returned until the 23rd.

Steve

There is a lot of possibilities for updates regarding the actual decorations in your list. For example G/C Harry Broadhurst DSO&Bar, DFC, AFC, MiD etc.

Hello Steve,
The list is an Excellent work .
I do not think that F/Lt Brettel was American, although he was flying with the Americans with 133 Sqdn.

Re: Operation Jubilee aircrew list

Alex,

Thanks for that, I assumed that the 'Eagle squadrons' were manned totally by Americans in 1942. I guess I should have checked the CWGC site, because I see that his parents are listed being from Fareham, Surrey.

Regards,

Steve

As always any further additions/corrections gratefully received.

Hello

Vaclav Ruprecht was my grandfather - are you able to give me any more info? I tried to click on the link (I appreciate it's a bit old now) but it was invalid.

Many thanks

Victoria Brennan (nee Ruprecht)

There is a lot of possibilities for updates regarding the actual decorations in your list. For example G/C Harry Broadhurst DSO&Bar, DFC, AFC, MiD etc.

Michal

Hi Steve

I know your list is old but as of Dec 2010 the link no longer works.

FYI My father (Flt Sgt Harold Groombridge 129 Squadron) flew a spitfire V operating as close support strafing the Hess battery over Dieppe prior to attack by 4th commando. His plane was attacked and hit by FW190s and he only just managed to escape by flying under electricity cables.
