Thomas H. Hitchcock, Monogram Aviation Publications

Sad to read that the publisher and author of many milestone books has left us:

Thomas Herold Hitchcock, June 29, 1936 - August 25, 2020.

"...In 1972, Tom launched Monogram Aviation Publications; a family owned specialty book publishing company where he served as CEO for over thirty-five years. Tom's work became synonymous with high quality innovative book design. He was well known around the world attracting authors from the US and abroad and publishing more than 50 exceptional titles dedicated to military aviation subjects spanning most of the 20th century. Tom also found time to personally author and illustrate a dozen titles dealing with German aviation subjects. Tom was especially proud when several Monogram books attained book-of-the-year awards and are now considered true collector editions....."

Rest in peace.

Sorry to hear this. Tom blazed a trail which others have since followed and for that we should all be grateful.

He changed what was possible in aviation publishing and all of us owe him a lot for that.

His "Messerschmitt '09 Gallery" was the first book I saw that explained WHY a photo was captioned as a G-10, a K-4 etc. He was happy to use photos of wrecks rather than captured and repainted specimens of German aircraft. I can also remember my long-awaited copy of "Jet Planes of the Third Reich" arriving about two minutes before I had to go out. That book proved a revelation when I got to look at it later that day. On a personal note, he put me in touch with Ferdinando D'Amico and J. Richard Smith for the first time.

I echo what Nick says. Extraordinary author and a friend.

A very honest and decent man. Ordering multiple numbers for our LW veterans meetings he was always punctual and genuinely enjoyed the feedback upon my return from each reunion. Those books were always a hit, even from the fellows English was little or lacking. Especially for example when we had a mini reunion of HE 162 fellows. Missing a real gentleman.
