Looking for Crew of Costal Command Hudson AE571

Hello together,

I´m looking for crew of Lockheed Hudson AE571, which could be assigned to Squadron 288. AE571 lost in night 26-27 July 1942, crashed off Cuxhaven in North Sea.

Crew is reported in German documents as New Zeelanders.

Thanks for help.

Are the dates and unit number correct?

288 Sqn don't record a loss overseas on that date, and they were an Anti Aircraft Co-Operation unit.

German Documents report the loss as follows:

"Besatzung 5 Neuseeländer, Kennung D Kok. RP A571"

Crew 5 New Zealanders, Code D-RP A571

RP belongs the Squadron 288, Serial could be AE571 which match a Hudson III.
288 Sqd. flew Hudson III.

May AE571 was loan to an other Squadron?

Date is correct, comes from the same German source.

Jabo

Hello,

Hudson III AE571 was never delivered to the RAF, it was transferred to the USAAF.

For the sake of accuracy - No.288 Sqn did suffer a loss on 27 July 1942. F/L Barnes crash-landed Hurricane X P5179 at Duxford and sustained concussion - P5179 was a write-off.

Hello,

No.75 (NZ) Sqn lost two Wellington III's on a raid on Hamburg on the night of 26/27 July, 1942. They were X3714:AA-W (6 RNZAF missing), and Z1596:AA-K (4 RNZAF killed, 1 RAF POW)*. Possibly one of these aircraft.

My thought was that it is Z3714 that will be the one you seek.

The code is X3714 not Z3714 (which is in a black out block in a bunch of Hurricane IIs)

Hello Jabo,

concerning the translated microfilmed German documents in the MACR list July 1942 you have mixed two different entries for the night 26/27 July 1942:
unknown aircraft type, crew 5 New Zealanders, crash location near Cuxhaven (microfilm frame no. 109157/68)
Hudson, markings D cockade RF, code A571, crash location not listed (microfilm frame no. 109194/95).

Leo
