Loss of RAF Mitchell 2 Oct 1944 (320 'Dutch' or 226 Squadron)
Hope some one can help me. On 2 October 1944 a Mitchell of 320 or 226 was hit by enemy fire (flak?) and came down ...
This Mitchell took part on a bomb sorty south of Arnhem (Huissen area) Does some one know to what squadron the pane belonged, what happened with her and what heppened to the crew? |

Shore's "2nd TAF" book as no Mitchell loss for this day. I know that
90 Mitchell and 34 Boston dropped about 200 tons of bombs on troops, guns, and MT SE of Arnhem with good results, helping to stop a little-know German counter-attack. Mitchell losses given in the book (serial, crew, time of the loss given by the book but I will not list them for the whole list, pleace choose the interesting cases) for this time area (from 17 Sep to 31 Oct): 25 Sep 44: two of 98 Sqn shot down by Fw190s north of Arnhem (both crew KIA) 28 Sep 44: one of 226 Sqn hit by Flak did a wheels up landing in UK 6 Oct 44: one of 180 Sqn crashed in Uk 15 Oct 44: one of 226 Sqn shot down by Flak near Nijmegen (4 POW) 24 Oct 44: one of 320 Sqn hit by Flak over Hebel, crew baled out over Allied territory 28 Oct 44: one if 226 Sqn shot down by Flak near Venlo (4 KIA) 29 Oct 44: two losses by 180 Sqn, both crew OK (one written off in crash-landing, another abandonned by crew) |
