Flying Accident Card Annotations
 

In the absence of access to official reports of RAF WW2 crashes, I have always felt it necessary to scrutinise every minute piece of official evidence that is available.

I have spent many years researching and pondering over 1940 Flying Accident Cards themselves, such as, what are the annotations telling us?

Letter A, B or C
One of the common standard abbreviations on early WW2 Cards is the A, B or C letter above the Killed or Injured K & I boxes on the Flying Accident Card and it seems that the A, B or C letter refers to the type of investigation being conducted into the crash or forced landing (attached).

Incidentally the additional letter 'F' in this attachment meant 'In Flight' see my next post below for these (could not upload in this posting).

A - A Court of Inquiry
B - An investigation being held a appropriate
C - A Commanding officer's Full Report

I have a selection of 1940 Flying Accident Cards which appear to rule out the type of flying A, B or C (also attached).

The In Flight 'F' 1-9 & 'M' 1-2 annotations in the Flying Accident Card "Cause" box are as follows:-
