Ju 88 3Z+DH 1./KG 77 Cudham 27 September 1940

Gents
Ju 88 3Z+DH of 1./KG 77 blew up over Cudham on 27 September 1940. The time given is 11.05. Nonetheless I fail to find what it had been doing there at the time. There was a raid of I/KG 77 in the morning and I&II/KG 77 in the late afternoon. Am I missing anything?
TIA

I'm not sure if this helps (from National Archives HW 5/5):
CX/JQ/348

1 At 0030/28/9 Signals Officer of Air Movement Control Couvron asked what had become of one or more a/c which had started on operations against England at 1230/27/9. (A)

At the same hour he was heard mentioning Ju 88 3Z+HH, 3Z+JN, 3Z+GN, 3Z+DC. (A)

These a/c of KG 77 may have been the missing ones. (C)
Note: "(A)" and "(C)" are grades of reliability of the information; times are GMT.

Cudham is 1 mile from Biggin Hill so very likely bombing Biggin airfield

Thanks Nick,
3Z+GN and 3Z+DC are confirmed to be lost over England.

Tony, there were two raids, one in the morning, I/KG 77 aircraft appearing in London area around 9:30 British time, and in the late afternoon, around 15:30. I fail to note, what an aircraft could have been doing at 11:00, when there were no combats reported by Fighter Command.

The target was London, a victim of Flak and the K Report does say 1105 hrs. Maye a mistake by the writer?

Franek

I was born and bred in Bromley 3 miles west from Biggin

From the book "Bromley in the Front Line"

"On 27/9/40 a Spitfire was shot down and crashed into 70-72 Queensway, Coney Hall at 9.40 am (about 30 years ago I lived at 67 opposite these houses, and there is a photo of this with my house in it) To continue from the book , at 11.05 am a Ju 88 was hit by AA fire and crashed in the grounds of Angus House, Cudham Lane , 3 members of the crew baled out and were captured a 4th crew member fell to his death due to parachute failure"

So there was a mission at that time, perhaps a recce as according to the book "Battle Over Britain "12 a/c from KG 77 were shot down over London in a short period early afternoon!!

Or perhaps the time, the aircraft was reported by the local police? It seems the time is repeated in various books, based on the same source. I find it surprising, nothing would have been claimed by fighters if there was a raid around 11 a.m. in the area.
For the morning raid, I have some 80 aircraft going, but some of them turned back, and only 30 got to the London area. 2. & 3./KG 77 were reputedly going for gasworks, perhaps Beckton Gasworks. I have a matching account of few Ju 88s going to a target in eastern London, one of them disintegrating in the air (which would suggest AA burst, indeed), but it must have occurred at around 9:30.
If the aircraft fell down at 11:05, indeed, the account must refer to another aircraft or is grossly inaccurate.

Hi

The reports in the book are all from local sources, this book list many houses destroyed by bombin/ V 1 and V 2, house No./street, date and times given including names of people killed. This data is not from the PRO

So it occurred at 11.05 am

Tony this is impossible. No more attack assessment missions had been flown on this time by bomber units. It was a job of recon units. For 100% it was a typo in K-report.

Hi,

I found also a claim of English flak timed 11.05 hrs London Inner Flak Zone for 1 Ju 88, which was brought down from an altitude of 500 m and crashed in Cudham but I think this is also a mistake - attack time that was reported by I./KG77 was 10.05 hrs (German time).
