Paris, night of 26–27 August 1944

In a 1985 Air Fan article, Alain Marchand wrote that during the German bombing that night the remains of an aircraft were recovered from the forecourt of the Gare des Gobelins railway station: 'without doubt a Ju 188 which KG 6 posted that day as "missing in the West".'

Does anyone know anything more about this machine, which is not mentioned in other accounts I've read of the liberation of Paris? It's the kind of thing you'd think a reporter or somebody would have photographed.

From what I can see, only III./KG 6 lost a Ju 188 that night but it crashed in Belgium

Cheers Chris. You'd think a wrecked plane in newly-liberated Paris would have drawn a big crowd next morning.

Possible urban myth?

Hello ,

Do you mean Ju-188 3E+AA involved in a midair collision ?

I think they called them rumours in those days! But yes, that does seem likely.
