as a lake north of Rovaniemi. Using Valtonen's spelling Kiestingin-Uhtuan didn't help either...ended up at Kestenga.... Sounds like an accident (no combat) and perhaps the aircraft came down in the Lake in question? B Rgds Stig |
Re: He60 1R+UH F.Kette Norwegen lost 1/10/41
Could be it?:
Kiestinki (FIN) (a.k.a. Kesten’ga, Kestenga) (65 53 N – 31 49 E) General: landing ground (Landeplatz) in N Finland 285 km ESE of Rovaniemi. A forward airstrip improvised at about the time SS-Division Nord and Finnish forces advanced through the area in August 1941 toward Louhi (Loukhi). Rarely mentioned after Jan 42 except for occasional use by courier aircraft. Operational Units: small elements of IV.(Stuka)/LG 1 (Aug 41 – Jan 42); 13.(Z)/JG 5 (Jan 44). Station Commands: none identified. Station Units (on various dates – not complete): none identified. [Sources: chronologies; BA-MA; NARA; PRO/NA; web site ww2.dk] |
Re: He60 1R+UH F.Kette Norwegen lost 1/10/41
Originally the approximate location was reported as Kiestinki - Uhtua area. Today those places are Kestenga and Kalevala in Russian Karelia. According to one source the exact location should be "an island south of Enonjoensuu". My problem is that I have not found this in any maps.
Yes, Norvajärvi is a lake 15 km north of Rovaniemi and at its eastern coast is the biggest cemetery of German soldiers in Finland where 2683 soldiers are buried. And yes, it was a transfer flight by two just in Finland arrived Fl.Erg.Gr. (See) persons, who possibly lost their way and crashed. They were waiting for the searchers for two weeks. They were completely exhausted when the Finnish troops found them on 16 October 1941, thought those to be Russians and therefore shot themselves to prevent becoming POW. Matti |
