WRECK OF B-17

Dear sirs, we are a group of scuba divers who love diving in the waters of Lake Bolsena, Central Italy.
During one of our dives, we found some metal structures (aluminum) that were part of the interior of the wings of an airplane.
A fisherman told us that in that place have been caught in his fishing net other metal structures (we saw) and oxygen bottles.
Many elderly people of the place told us that this place is the place where she was knocked down by German fighters a Flying Fortress.
How do I check the news on the web since there is no news of the crash? Is there any database where I can verify the information?
Thank you in advance,
Victor

Good evening Victor !

Give a date of the crash and the type of the a/c. Then it's very easy to find out, who it was.

Best regards !

You may also wish to have a look at Anne Storm's page here:

I'm sure she'd be most interested in hearing the location of the wreckage. Perhaps there is more than one aircraft in the lake.

Victor & Mark
I am very interested, although I know there are wartime plane wrecks in Lake Bolsena including a more modern helicopter .Please see my website page --
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb....akebolsena.htm

which will explain my interest .I was at the lake in April 2996 while a search was conducted for my father's Liberator KH158 .F/O T R Millar RAAF of 31 Squadron SAAF, based at Celone, Foggia. The Liberator ,with 8 crew, disappeared somewhere in Italy or in lake or coastal waters on 12th October 1944 while on a supply dropping mission to Italian partisans based in the Apennines. Romagna Air Finders,Harry Shindler and representatives of South African and Australian Embassies were also there .Search conducted by the British Embassy in Rome & authorised by the Prefecto of Viterbo.

Please email me storm04ATglobalnet.co.uk.Sub @ for AT

Thank you
Anne

I just realised your post title is Wreck of B-17 , used by the USAAF .
My father's Liberator was a B-24

Re: WRECK OF B-17

Dear Anne, I live in a village near the Lake, and i know your story.
With my group of scuba divers (Assopaguro Association) we have already found another B-24 on the seabed of Montalto di Castro, Central Italy.
With a help of others friends we have classified the bomber (a B-24 H, serial number 41-28677), and we shot a film (section "video" in our web site www.Assopaguro.net).
But I believe that the plane wich I'm talking about is just a B-17. Witness have told me this.
When I know something more definite I'll let you know.
Best regards Victor
