Ju 88 G-7

Hello all,

As you may know, I have published photos of a captured Ju 88 G-7 fuselage in my book "Captured Eagles Vol. I". To my knowledge, these photos were the first ones published that actually showed a Ju 88 G-7, but they showed an incomplete fuselage without wings or engines.

As far as I know there is still no known photo of a Ju 88 G-7 with wings and engines. I read that two Ju 88 G-7 were destroyed at Brandenburg-Briest on the ground.

Now, by chance, I discovered photos that may show the remains of two Ju 88 G-7s. If so, they would be the first ones of their kind. As I plan to publish them in my Volume II of "Captured Eagles", I obviously can't show them here (thank you for your understanding), but I can describe them to you: the photo shows two Ju 88 Gs. One is lacking its radar nose cone and engines, but it seems that it has the same wings as Ju 188s (although that may be a misinterpretation by me and I need to compare the photos with Ju 188 photos in more detail). And there are the remains of a burnt Ju 88 G that clearly has Jumo 213E attached, but not traces of any propeller. The tail is visible, but unfortunately the photo is not sharp enough to read the serial number.

My guess is that these are two Ju 88 G that were being completed (or converted from standard G-6s) as Ju 88 G-7, but were destroyed before the airfield was captured.

Were there any other Ju 88 G-6 with Jumo 213E? If not, the photo is most likely the first one to be published that shows two more or less complete Ju 88 G-7 (apart from the fuselage shots in my first volume).

Is anything known about conversions of Ju 88 G-6s to G-7 at Dessau? Dessau may have been the airfield where the photos were taken, but I need to do some more research to be sure.

Cheers,

Roger

Re: Ju 88 G-7

From the monthly reports from JFM-Flugzeugvertrieb up to 30.09.1944, it seems that the production of both Ju 88G-6 and Ju 88G-7 were new aircraft and not conversions. According to the RLM Flugzeug-Programm Nr. 227 giving the delivery situation up to 30.11.1944, 881 Ju 88G-6 had been delivered out of a total of 1866 aircraft on order. These were equipped with 2 x 9-8013B-2 engines.
At the same time a total of 480 Ju 88G-7 were on order but none delivered by 30.11.1944. They were supposed to be equipped with 2 x 9-8213D-0 engines. Deliveries of the G-7 model was scheduled from March 1944.

9-8213B

Wonder why they hv added a 8 in front of the engine model, 9 is for the motor, but usually 8 for the fuselage..

The first G-7 hs been delivered an Vers.Verb. der OKL on 28.March 45, nd noone to unit prior 11.april, after we dont hv the docs..

Hello Seaplanes and Rémi,

Thank you for the info. A Junkers data sheet that specifies the dimensions and equipment of the Ju 88 G-7 mentions that it was to be equipped with Jumo 213E.

8-8213D was the Luftwaffe designation of the Jumo 213E for Ju 88/388s (see http://www.focke-wulf190.com/leistun..._Jumo213_2.htm).

Since one aircraft is yet missing engines and the other one (wrecked) did not have any propellers attached, I think these two aircraft were under conversion and incomplete when they were destroyed. They could be the two prototypes or already serial aircraft.

Re: Ju 88 G-7

Difference in use of the Jumo213 is for what purpose the engine was used, fighter or bomber. The different load on the coolant system and turbo (discharging heat) let to the use of different diameter axial coolers and a different piping for the engine head and a different type of propeller.
so a 213 as a bomber has a cooler of 1300 diameter and a vs111 propeller.

Naming the correct way the engine possibilities for the Ju88G-7 is as follows and note the difference in Triebwerks-Gerät and Motor Gerät:
Triebwerks-Gerät- Nr.9-8013 B2
Motor Gerät- Nr.9-213 A1
Zelle Ju 88/188
Luftschraube VS 111
Bemerkung Bombertriebwerk Axialkühler 1300 0

or

Triebwerks-Gerät- 9-8213 D1
Motor Gerät- 9-213 E1
Zelle Ju 88/188
Luftschraube VS 9 spät. or VS 19
Bemerkung Bombertriebwerk Axialkühler 1300 0

Re: Ju 88 G-7

Probably a mistake in the doc , we hv to read 9-8213 B-2 for the G-6 nd 9-8213 D-0 f. the G-7, D-0 seems to indicate that motor was experimental

Triebwerk the complete Motor-group you add an 8 in front of the model

Motor you keep usual 9 for the engines + model number quite clear
