Bf 109G-6 WNr. 164 979

Does any reader have definitive information about the service of Bf 109G-6 WNr. 164 979? There seems to be a contradiction in the record of this aircraft, as follows:

According to USSTAF, Adv. HQ, Air Service Cmd., Director of Tech. Service, Tech. Intell., Rept. A-68, dated 28.09.44, the fuselage and engine only of the crashed Bf 109G-6 WNr. 164 979 was found at St. André-de l'Eure, France. The marking "yellow band 20 in. wide" [JG 11?] was recorded.

In contradiction to the above notation, Stenman, Mersu, p. 358, records the Bf 109G WNr. 164 979 N S + X Q in Finnish service between 28.06.44 and 23.03.53. It was registered as MT-463.

Most probably a typographical error is at play here. But does any reader know what the mistake might be and the true service career of WNr. 164 979?

The same Werk Nummer is given in "Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report No. 257 Dated 25 October 1944" (TNA AIR 40/45) but no mention of a yellow band, just "smashed up" in the remarks column and the engine was DB 605 A-1 No. 00201904.

The new edition of Jean-Bernard Frappé's "La Luftwaffe face au Débarquement Allié" has the same Werk Nummer too (probably from the same source).

Probably typo in Stenman's book. The original aircraft card kept by the Finnish Air Force Depot has WNr. 163979 without SKZ for aircraft registration MT-463. Perhaps reason was that several other Bf 109 G-6 aircraft received at the end of June 1944 had WNr. in block 1649xx.

WNr. 164979 was with III./JG 3 according to Prien.

The Stkz NS+XQ is correct for W/Nr.164979 and comes within the block 164963 to 164988
The W/Nr.163979 has the Stkz SR+ZX so perhaps this W/Nr is correct for MT-463 as the Finnish records state just a confusion/typo with the correct W/Nr/Stkz connection but leading to the wrong conclusion for future researchers. Within this block SR+ZI (163964) went to Finnland as MT-435.
I would state the the W/Nr.164979 looks like being correct for the Allied Intelligence Docs.

Tom,
I have NS+XQ as a Bf 109 F-2 WNr. 9187. Any thoughts on this?
Regards,

Norbert

Hi Norbert
I agree with Gerhard - NJ+XQ was a Bf109F-2 - W/Nr.9187

Thank you Matti, Nick, and others who replied in the best TOCH traditions of collegial help. You info was exactly what I needed to reconcile Kari Stenman's typo.

Not withinstanding ca. three errors in the individual aircraft entries, this book is beautifully done and has given me a wealth of info concerning late 16x xxx series Bf 109Gs.

Many thanks again, fellows.
