14 October 1944 on eastern front

I have two questions:

1) A Soviet ace was lost this day, Kapitan Pavel Konstantinovich Babaylov of 163 IAP. All I have about him is: An eskadrilya commander, he was seen to score his 33rd victory but was then himself shot down and killed. He became posthumously a Hero of the Soviet Unon on 23 February 1945.

I would like to know more about the loss of this pilot.

2) On this day Libau was bombed and the crew of U-717 lost 2 killed and 3 wounded. This raid was very probably flown by Soviet aircraft (no trace in US or British records) and I would like to know the Soviet side of the story.

Thanks in advance

In brief: Capt Babaylov's final score was 27 personal + 4 shared kills; on the date of his death he was served in 163 Gv.IAP (former 249 IAP), but most of his victories (24+4) he scored when served in 790 IAP flying LaGG-3s. His La-5 was shot down by enemy ground fire. That day he (and his regiment at all) not scored any kill, his last success (Fw190) dated 06.08.44.

If You mean St.Lt. Lazrev Sergei, HSU from 728 IAP - he was killed during escort mission on March 1, 1945 in mid-air collision with Pe-2 bomber over the target :( .

Exact place where Babailov was shot down I don't know - somewhere over Poland in Zambrow area. He was buried in Polish village Tarnowo-Toski, 10 km S of Zambrow.

Must correct myself: real Babaylov's score is 24 personal + 7 shared kills.
