Are these a primary source material or secondary?

I would of thought that they are primary source as they provide direct firsthand evidence of an event.

Thanks for your input. But aren't the documents that a citation is based on (ie logbook, squadron diary or operations record book etc) the primary sources?

I would say that in terms of primary source the citation and the record that provides the persons actions/recommendation are one and the same. They both provide direct evidence.

Yes, agreed. And hard to argue with this: '...original documents and objects which were created at the time of study'.
