NJG 6 during night July 21/22 1944
 

Hallo,

does somebody know more about NJG 6 operations during night July 21/22 1944? According to Tony Wood´s site, pilots of III./NJG 6 claimed two Wellingtons and 1 DC-3 (?). It seems to be planes shot down during raid on Fanto Refinery in Pardubice, Eastern Bohemia over Bohemia and Moravia. I know about crashes only 2 Wellingtons

Vickers Wellington B.Mk.X, JA 521, 231. BW, 37. BS, pilot F/O Francis B. Newmarch, 5 KIA nearby village Stošíkovice na Louce, district Znojmo (Znaim). Plane was recovered in 1990.

Vickers Wellington B.Mk.X, LP 204, 330. BW, 150. BS, pilot F/Sgt. Frederick E. Palmer, 5 KIA nearby village Němčičky u Mikulovic, district Znojmo

But I know that day 205th RAF Bomber Group lost all in all 6 bombers. So, my questions are:

1) does somebody know what were other RAF Bombers lost during night July 21/22 1944?

2) does somebody know what are sharp destination of following quadrats:

14 Ost N/DM-4, 14 Ost N/OQ-29, 14 Ost N/BM-6

3) does somebody know something about NJG 6 actions during night?

Could the "DC-3" be a Soviet airplane? Just a thought...

I would agree with Denes. The DC - 3 was most likely a Russian Lend Lease C - 47. Just saw a picture of one in a Russian Museum.

Hello Michal,

the third (and last) Wellington lost over the Czech territory that night was LN699 (C) of 70 Sqn which crashed-landed near Semín in Přelouč area. Complete crew of Lt. N.K. Weekes taken POW. Allegedly victim of Oblt. Helmut Schulte of III./NJG 6.

The other losses were:

Wellington MK. X, LN808, QT-B, 142 Sqn, disappeared already en-route to targe, possibly near St. Pölten area. The complete crew of P/O E. Golloway listed as MIA. Possibly victim of Oblt. Josef Kraft of III./NJG 6.

Wellington Mk. X, LP301, BL-A, 40 Sqn, crashed due to mechanical trouble in the Adriatic sea, complete crew of Sgt R. Bodley baled out off Porto San Giorgio and rescued.

Liberator Mk. VI EW167(B), 34 Sqn SAAF, crashed near Klagenfurt, crew of Lt. K.A. Patton KIA.

EW167/B No 34 Sqn LIberator
JA 521 No 37 Sqn Wellington
LN699 No 70 Sqn Wellington
LN808/B No 142 Sqn Wellington
LP204 No 150 Sqn Wellington

Regarding C-47, it was from 10 TCS/60TCG and was attacked (presumably) by Ju 88 while circling over LG, left wing and engine set on fire, exploded in the air at 23.35, 300 yards from drop zone (in todays Croatia). I have only info about Lt Largent - copilot, having been rescued. There were a few other reports from July '44 about Allied transport aircraft being attacked upon landing by Ju 88 - looking aircraft, considering ther times of attack that were around midnight and reports of four forward firing guns, there is possibility they were aircraft used by NJG6.

1. 23.22 Wellington, north west Neunkirchen Lt. Spoden
2. 23.40 Wellington, DM 4/ 14 Ost, Olt Kraft
3. 23.42 DC 3, OQ 2-9, 14 Ost, Hptm Fellerer
4. 24.00 Wellington, Pardubitz, Olt Schulte

I never saw war diary...does it mention any details about missions? How many planes were airborne, and any circumstances of air combat??
I am interested in detaisl about DC3 claims on Sept 14, 1944 evening
