Hello Theo,

Please check the 16/17-9-1942 claim about the unknown bomber at Overhetfeld: one week earlier a Wellington was shot down at the same place by Ofw. Wieland of the I./NJG 1. Perhaps a typo was made.

Good luck! Marcel

Good morning Theo !

You'll find plenty of information and photos concerning the downing of this aircraft in the book "Archäologie des Zweiten Weltkriegs - Flugzezugabstürze in Hagen " on the pages 185 - 191.

Many thanks Marcel, Chris and Horst for your feedback. You're right Marcel about the claim at Overhetfeld on 10-11.9.42:

Ofw. Karl Wieland: 2 1./NJG1 Wellington Overhetfeld, S. Venlo: 4.000 m. 00.15 26 OTU Wellington DV703

I'm not sure if this NJ claim concerns a poss. 'double' claim by the 7. Flak Division that I listed for 16/17.9.42; will try and found out more about this ..

Cheers, Theo

Dear all -and especially Horst,

Would you be able to check in the book Archäologie des Zweiten Weltkriegs - Flugzezugabstürze in Hagen the entry for 75 Squadron Wellington BJ625 (prob. crashed at Neuss) and/or 57 Sqn Wellington BJ830 (hit by Flak and crashed at Hagen, Philipshöhe ca. 03.30 hrs). Both lost during the 11-12 August 1942 Mainz raid.

Of the crash site of either of these aircraft, two photos were published in Martin Middlebrook's Bomber Command War Diaries, page 402. I would like to have confirmation of the correct identity of the Wellington shown in these crash photos.

Cheers and thanks, Theo
