"The Evacuation of Dunkirk has been immortalised in books, prints and films, narrated as a story of an outnumbered, inexperienced RAF defeating the battle-hardened Luftwaffe and protecting the evacuation. This book revives the historiography by analysing the air operations during the excavation. Raffal draws from German and English sources, many for the first time in the context of Operation DYNAMO, to argue that both sides suffered a defeat over Dunkirk.

This work will consider the resources and tactics of both sides during DYNAMO and challenges the traditional view that the Luftwaffe held the advantage.The success that the Luftwaffe achieved during DYNAMO, including halting daylight evacuations on 1 June, will be evaluated and the supporting role of RAF Bomber and Coastal Command will be explored in detail for the first time. Concluding that the RAF was not responsible for the Luftwaffe's failure to prevent the evacuation, Raffal demonstrates that the reasons lay elsewhere."

How many illustrations?? Would agree the price seems way over the top for what it is apparently offering and will it then offer anything new?

The clue is in the word “Academic” in the publisher’s name (Bloomsbury also own Osprey, whose books tend to be a bit cheaper!). High pricing seems common with books that are (I’d imagine) directed at a relatively small number of university libraries rather than the mass market. Pity, because it sounds interesting. The upside is that it may be based on a PhD thesis and universities often put those online either for all-comers or for registered readers of their libraries.

Yep, this is on Amazon: He holds a doctorate from the University of Hull for his thesis on the operations of the RAF and Luftwaffe during the evacuation of Dunkirk.

Has any member bought this, at over £70 in the UK it's a hefty fork out for a book that may end up propping up the bed, opinions and descriptions would be greatly appreciated.
