Can anyone identify the name on the nose or the identity of this Mustang? P-51B with victory markings, 8th AF?

That's a very interesting one. Kill markings for ETO but noseart looks very Pacific ..... but AFAIK the 8th only flew P-47s in the Pacific.

It's P-51B 42-106712 FT-I "Hotei II" of Lt Don McDowell, 354FG, 353FS, 9th AF.

Hello,
according to the MACR 5133 1st Lt Don McDowell O-744728 was lost with this aircraft on 28 May 1944. In Ivo De Jong "Mission 376" is noted: mechanical troubles, crashed in North Sea. His Body was washed ashore in England in the second half of July and was buried at the American Military Cemetery in Brookwood. Regards Leo |
