Travemünde, prewar (1930s)

Does this eBay caption interest ? It shows Junkers A 50 Junior D-1915 (that is still exists as OH-ABB, currently on loan in Dessau museum, last time I knew). What is in background is I think is very rare, at least never herd it happened. In background are four single-engine US Navy planes moored to boyo and shore. Two are coded "2/1" and "2/6" so I think the were from an USN warship (crusier or similar). http://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Erprobun...IAAOSwT~9Whsta And others from same seller, interesting collection (some seen before) but many labelled "Erprobungsstelle Travemunde" http://www.ebay.de/sch/m.html?_odkw=...=Flug&_sacat=0 -Ed |

Re: Travemünde, prewar (1930s)
The Junkers A-50 is nowadays on display at Terminal 2 in Helsinki Vaanta airport, so it has returned to Finland.

I believe the background is of some Vought O2U from VO-2S (the 2 in 2/1 etc) If so they belonged to the US Navy Battleship Division Two. The year is 1929 or 1930. No idea which actual vessel they belonged to... Cheers Stig |
Re: Travemünde, prewar (1930s)
I assume the photo was taken when the three battleships of BatDiv2/Scouting Fleet visited Kiel, Germany from 5 to 9 July 1930. Flagship of Rear Admiral Wat Tyler Cluverius, Jr. was USS ARKANSAS (BB 33), accompanied by USS FLORIDA (BB 30) and USS UTAH (BB 31).

Re: Travemünde, prewar (1930s)
Thanks Gents. Bingo on Vought O2U Corsair of Battle Division 2, Scouting Fleet. Did not find correct type before retiring last night. The Junkers A 50 Junior (no dash there, that is typo write it there ... hint .. hint .. at it again ...) but W.Nr. 3530 D-1915 was registered to makers in July 1930, so time frame does fit. Exported December 1930. (according Karl Ries D-numbers register book). One USN book has photo of "2/10" belonging USS FLORIDA at one point. So nummerically, 12 a/c, four per ship (thay had hangar space below decks) possibly places "2/1" (and "2/6") on the two other ships. Note Orthocromic Yellow turned verydark on upper surfaces of wings.
- Ed PS. I think this post is in wrong "post" should be "pre" :-) |
