Fw 190 A-8 W.Nr. 172724 —> Anything known?

Hello,

Does anyone have information about Fw 190 A-8, W.Nr. 172724? Apparently, it survived the war as a GI brought home some souvenirs of this aircraft.

It was produced around May 1944 and was probably operational for at least a couple of months (if it was found in France after the invasion) if not until the end of the war (if it was found in Germany).

Thanks,

Roger

Hello Roger,
Knowing with which unit the GI served, or any other information, may help in narrowing a location.
Respectfully,

Hello Steve,

I am trying to find that out. The veteran already passed away in the 1980s and the family didn't know the unit. I'll ask them to look for documents that may provide a clue about the unit.

Regards,

Roger

It seems that nothing is known about 172724.

Knowing where aircraft with adjacent W.Nr. (i.e. 1727xx) were delivered to may give a clue where this aircraft may have been sent to too. I only found information about 172733 that went to JG 300. Are any others known?

It sems that J.G.54 was the predominant recipient of FW 190A-8 around
W.Nos. 172724, but some aircraft also went to J.G.51. Some were also lost
when in the hands of Überführungsgeschwader 1.

Re: Fw 190 A-8 W.Nr. 172724 —> Anything known?

Thank you. Good to know to which unit the aircraft likely belonged to. I did a W.Nr. search as well and found the following losses:

172712: 1./JG 11 lost 26 Jun 44
172716: 11./JG 11 lost 26 Sep 44
172724: ?
173733: JG 300 Schröder’s Red 19
172736: 1./JG 26 lost 7 Aug 44
172737: 16./JG 54 lost 25 Sep 44
172739: 7.JG 51 lost 7 Aug 44

Apart from JG 54, also JG 11, JG 1, JG 300 and JG 51 may have been the unit of 172724. But I don’t have information on the sister aircraft of 172724 (i.e. 172722-23 and 172725-26).

I can fill in the following:
172713 7./J.G.51 29.06.44 100%
172719 Fl.Überf.Geschw.1 24.06.44 100%
172720 J.G.54 09.07.44 60%
172729 I.J.G.1 Schw.8 27.07.44 100%

Thank you. Considering that the aircraft was found by an American GI, it probably served with another unit (training?) at the end of the war if it had initially gone to JG 54 in the East.

Since it survived the war, I hope that at some point photos of this aircraft turn up. I will watch out for this W.Nr. on GI photos of captured Fw 190s.
