FuG 24 ZVG 15 Drawings or Pictures
 

Hello,

Does anybody have a drawing (e.g. from a manual) or picture of how the ZVG 15 of the FuG 24 radio system looked like?

Thanks the the pictures. I have seen them before (past Hermann Historica auction). They show the receiver and sender of the FuG 24, but unfortunately not the ZVG 15, which was required for homing flights. The sets in the auction had probably been used by the Bavarian police after the war. The ZVG 15 was of no use to them.

I could not find a good picture of the ZVG 15 yet. I know that a reprint of the FuG 24 manual exists, but I don't have a copy. Maybe it is shown in that manual.

My question was related to the installation of the ZVG 15 in the He 162. I found a good (probably wartime) drawing that shows where it probably was installed. According to the equipment list of the He 162 from October 1944 it was to be located behind the cockpit on the fuselage spine above the fuel tank. The battery and transformer for the FuG 24 were also to be installed in the same location.

In the drawing, published in a Japanese book, no. 38 shows the battery and I believe that the ZVG is either no 41 or no 44. Unfortunately, I cannot read Japanese. No 41 mentions FuG 24, but I can't read the rest. Can anybody read Japanese and tell me what the captions for no 41 and 44 are?

If equipment list is correct the ln number is LN28682. That is a component made by Lorenz.

I have known and checked the restoration photos of the French He 162, but their ZVG 15 was missing. I also found photos of the interior of the He 162 that the Technikmuseum in Berlin recently acquired from Canada. The ZVG 15 is also missing unfortunately in their machine.

The photos you posted of the rear fuselage show the FuG 24 transmitter and FuG 25, the FuG 24 receiver was in the cockpit and the ZVG 15 as well as the transformer (Umformer 15) above the main fuselage tank. But you can see a wodden plate on shock absorbing mounts.

I have found photos of a diassembled He 162 in the UK, taken shortly after the war, where you can indeed see two boxes of similar size further aft of the battery, which was also in the same compartment. The transformer of the FuG 16 was relatively large (much larger than the ZVG 16) and if the one to be used for the FuG 24 was similar in size, it must have been at another location, OR it was smaller in size.

Therefore, I asked for photos of the ZVG 15, so that I can determine which of the two boxes was the ZVG 15 and which possibly the transformer.

Does anyone has a copy of the FuG 24 manual? I am pretty sure some drawings or photos of the ZVG 15 and Umformer 15 would be shown in that manual.

PS: A drawing in a Japanese book that appears to be a German wartime drawing shows the battery and two boxes. The translation of the captions says:

Nr. 38: Battery
Nr. 41: Receiver
Nr. 44: Direction Finding Device

We know that the FuG 24 receiver was installed in the rear fuselage. So maybe, the drawing is from an early design phase and changes were made later.

The British photo of the disassembled He 162 still shows two boxes of different size in that compartment (besides the battery). According to the AG-Liste from Oct44, the inverter was also installed in the same location.

Assuming that one was the inverter and one the ZVG 15. Which one was which?

Photos of the compartment in the He 162 owned by the Berliner Technikmuseum show shock absorbing mounts in the location just behind the battery. I would not expect that they used these mounts on an inverter. So, the most likely explanation would be that the ZVG 15 was the first behind the battery and second the inverter.

HOWEVER, on the British photo, the rear box is smaller in size and I would have expected the opposite for the inverter (i.e. larger than the ZVG 15).

SO, mistery still not completely solved....
