D 6889

Good evening !

In a photo-book of a late professional photographer in my home area (Western Germany), I found a WW I photo of a British biplane a/c, which is surrounded by German soldiers. The a/c's serial is D6889 and this s/n is clearly visibly on the photo.

Can anyone give me a notice of the fate of this aircraft ?

Thank you very much !

Hello Horst,
From the book "The S.E.5 File" an Air Britain publication.
D6889 was one of 150 S.E. 5a's ordered under contract No. A.S. 30231 [ or 30281 ?] from Wolseley Motors Ltd, Birmingham and numbered D6851 to D7000. Delivered to 1 AAP Coventry.
D6889 - (Viper) engine ( 200hp Wolseley W.4A Viper );
At 1 AAP( aeroplane acceptance park ) Coventry 1.6.1918;
92 Sqdn Tangmere 6.6.1918;
To France with Sqdn 2.7.1918;
[ A claim for a] 2-Str ( 2 - seater ) OOC (out of control) Armentiéres 19.00-20.00, 28.7.1918 (Lt EV Holland);
FTR from 10.00 OP (operational patrol), last seen at 11.10 diving on an EA formation near Cambrai 5.9.1918 (Lt EV Holland POW).

Wonder who Holland shot down on the 28.7.1918 ?
And
Who brought him down on the 5.9.1918 ?

All the very best
Alex

OLtn. Bruno Loerzer JG 3 Inchy-en-Artois

Ltn. T. Himmer Jasta 37 north-east Ribécourt-la-Tour

Ltn. auf der Haar Jasta 46 north-east Ribécourt-la-Tour

Only the victories from Meyer, Loerzer and Himmer where confirmend.

Between the small villages in the vincinity of Cambrai where only 5 to 8 km distance. At that time the socalled Battle of the Droucourt-Quenaut Linie was started at 1. Sept. 1918.

Danke, Hans

When the copyrights of this photo are cleared, I'll scan the photo and put it into this forum. Perhaps, the forum can clear the circumstances in question of this landing in enemy teritory.

Best regards !
