Photo Hanriot 172 F-APXI

Currently on ebay there is a photo of Hanriot 172 F-APXI at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flugzeu...QAAOSwtbBewlV5 Has anyone any information as to which unit the F-APXI , or indeed any other Hanriot 172, was assigned to in 1939/40? Regards, Clint |

Thanks for the information. Alas I accepted the information on the Air Britain site. It sounds like I might benefit from obtaining a copy of Avions Hors serie 24. Can you tell me, does it contain a lot of information with regard to aircraft with civil registrations in 1940? Also , a further question if I might. I have F-APXH down as a Hanriot 172 serving with the E.A.P. at La Rochelle. While the source appears reliable, can you please confirm that F-APXH was a Hanriot 172 and not a 182. Regards, Clint |

I believe there is a printing error in Avions Hors Serie 24. F-APXI was certainly a Hanriot H.172N as was indeed F-APXH. The whole range of small sesquiplanes (H.170 -H.195) are terribly difficult to differentiate from each other since, with the usual practice in France, they had slightly different engines and probably some other small refinements, many internal. The 170 range had Salmson engines The 180 range had Renault engines The 190 range had Régnier Since both the 172 and 182 were built towards the same standard (they were both manufactured as 'biplace de transformation') I would say the only outside difference is the engine. From my feeble production lists of the two models H.172 No 7 was registered F-AXPI H.182 No 7 was registered F-AOJF Of course Adl'A chose the Hanriot 182 so it was produced in a far larger quantity. Cheers Stig PS: Yes there are quite a few photos of civil wrecks as well (that is what the booklet is all about - wrecks - mainly military ones!) but you will not find much regarding their unit location. Some bases are identified (some guessed and some wrong). |

The 170 range of aircraft was not produced in great numbers so cannot be classified as a success. Max 10 civil aircraft were built (but I have only evidence of eight), while the Marine took a further six H.175. There are some photos here and there, and if you did not download this one, you can see if you spot any obvious differences. Cheers Stig |

Thanks for that. I can see from your attachment, that if the view of the engine is good enough it shouldn't be too hard to differentiate between members of the H.170 family on the one hand and the H.180 on the other.
