Hawker Hurricane cockpit canopy
 

Hello All,
I see that you have people, such as Timothy, who are familiar with real Hurricanes.
I am interested in the sliding canopy detail, in particular how the clear view window operates.
I have looked at many photographs, and only found one which MAY have the window open, indicated by a shadow on the fuselage. Not clear whether this is a stray item, or if it hinged outwards. I expected the lower front window to slide back behind pane 2.

I could be totally wrong in what I think I am seeing..... but here goes.

Looking at those pictures that show the inside view of the first panel on the left and in particularly looking at the release mechanism at the top of the panel, it seems to me the window had to swing out. It appears the pilot would just use the knob to push the release hooks slightly forward which would release the 3 hooks from the three pins at the top of the window. The window could not slide back as the first two pins would hit the 2nd and 3rd hooks, but the window could swing out. I don't think it would swing inward either as that would also hit the top release hooks.

Missing from the canopy but can be seen in photos such as this (save the Preview/Sample image and enlarge it ) is a 2nd "D" handle at the front left (probably another one on the right side also) which could be used by the pilot to slide the whole canopy backwards or forward once it was unlocked.

Thanks for the description, R Swank, that's interesting.
Unfortunately, when I use that link, I see "1 of 12", but all the others are icons of missing photos.
If you have access to them, any chance of forwarding to either here, or my personal email?

Follow-up to above:
Pilot's Notes mentions a "knock-out panel is incorporated in the hood at its port front bottom corner........."
I would still love to see those photos if you have them, as that area doesn't get much attention by photographers.

There's definitely a probationary period, but I thought that it only restricted the new member.
Meanwhile, I'm with gmail. The address is (all in lc), my user name followed by sfv.
Hopefully that'll stop robots from grabbing it.

I'm hoping that RS' pics show some internal detail.
When my probationary period is over, you should see a link to my website. I mention there that the full sized Hurricane instrument panel which I built is intended for a full scale cockpit replica. This is why the detail of that knock-out panel has my attention at present.
