JU 88 A1 plate

Hi guys, I have this plate in my collection, it was found west of kalinin, next to Moscow, was wandering if you could hopefully help me out to identify which squadron did it belong to? and also any other further information about it, such as crash date and how it was brought down, thanks for your help, regards, Juan

Re: JU 88 A1 plate

If you are talking about the small plate on the window frame my guess is that it indicates the part number for the frame and not an aircraft ID plate. Ed, any thoughts?

Re: JU 88 A1 plate

Hi Juan,

It's unlikely that a data plate on such a part would be marked with an airplane WNr., and I see no indication of a WNr. on this plate. Thus the particular airplane this window frame assembly was installed on can not be identified that way. What I do see is:

Zeichg., part drawing number, 140-11.

Abnahme, acceptance/build date, 8.40 (August 1940). Also, it appears that inspector stamps are entered.

B.Nr., part serial number, 1451.

W.Nr., I do not see an entry.

Ed, please adjust my comments as needed.

Thanks for showing the plate!

Steve

Yes, Basically not able say any specific aircraft or unit. Many seem possible. I was first thinking "original/aircraft/plate", but all seemed too far away "closest to where (likely) fitted originally" (most were France or West, just a few in The East) - but then place name "Kalinin" brought up several planes.
Any one of them could have had this - as "parts travel was considerable at the front" (parts travel was considerable in and after BoB, so likely East as well). This is part that could be fitted to almost any Ju 88 after 1940.

1241 Ju 88 5F+GM 4.(F)/14 (Gen.d.Lw.b.Ob.d.H. East)
OPS (F) mis (100%) unk location (Kalinin) 14.10.1941 (F Uffz. Rudolf Nagelmüller, B Lt. Heirich Färber, BF Uffz. Karl Fehrholz and BS Obgefr. Rudolf Volz mis)

2516 Ju 88 A-4 Stab.III/KG 76 (Luftflotte 2 East)
OPS (F) dam by enemy fire and crash landed (100%) near Kalinin 28.10.1941 (crew was uninjured)

5514 Ju 88 A-4 F1+LC 1./KG 76 (Luftflotte 2 East)
OPS (F) downed by AA fire (100%) near Kalinin 11.10.1941 (F Fw. Ludwig Schneider mis/inj, BO Ofw. Maximilian, BF Fw. Hermann Ronzheimer and BS Fw. Alfred Fenbahue mis/rep allright in losses 21.11.41)

360162 Ju 88 C-6 [F1+WM] 4./KG 76 (Fliegerkorps VIII East) OPS (F) missing (100%) unk location (Wolokoje-Kalinin) 26.03.1942 (F Lt. Karl Stieg, B Gefr. Werner Köpke and BF Uffz. Friedrich Pilz mis) (rep Ju 88 C6 F1+WM nr folgt in LWFLV losses 20v27.03.42; amd o360 in d/15.05.42 - Placing here is speculative!)

144351 Ju 88 A-14 III/KG 51 (Luftflotte 4 East) OPS (F) dam by AA fire (60%) at Kalinin 14.01.1943 (BF Fw. Erich Schluz missing)

Other parts (if found) could give other clues. Thanks for posting. All plates are usefull data!

Re: JU 88 A1 plate

Many thanks Ed, your help is highly appreciated, the seller I bought it from only knew about Kalinin and not much more unfortunately, so we ll have to guess and especulate among those options that you mentioned. It s great news that it s been narrowed down to those and if by any chance I find out more information will post it
