Engine dataplate

I have a dataplate from a Merlin Engine.

"MERLIN", then a stamp "X"
"GEAR UNIT NO GU" Then stamped "46809" (maybe 46909, or even 46309)

Any idea if the aircraft could be traced from this info?

Re: Engine dataplate

No, it cannot.

You have the data plate for the nose case/gear box. The gear box S/N would not correspond with the engine S/N.

Each Merlin would have a data plate that includes the engines Serial Number (yours does not) and that particular serial number would then have had to been mentioned/included in the MACR, Accident Report, etc., to give you any chance of finding its history.

Data plate with S/N.

The "X" may indicate "Merlin X", if so per Wiki, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolls-Royce_Merlin
  • Merlin X
First Merlin with two-speed supercharger, 1,145-horsepower (853 kW) in low gear at 5,250 feet, 1,010-horsepower (754 kW) in high gear at 17,750 feet. First of Rolls-Royce unitised "Power Plant" installation designs for this engine in 1937[16] and used in Handley Page Halifax I, Vickers Wellington II, and Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V and VII.
