"ROOSTER" procedure

I've seen several references to this procedure being used in the Mediterranean to home a strike force (air or naval) on to shipping targets located by RAF shadowing aircraft. The trouble is, everything I've read assumes that the reader already knows how it worked.

So was ROOSTER a radio transmitter, radar reflector, transponder or … what?

Thanks in advance.

Rooster is discussed on page 376 under items 28 and 29.

Click on the page shown on the link to get to the full page, then it drag up and down to read:

It appears that "Rooster" was a modification of an IFF Mark II transponder.

Hi Nick,
If you need more information, there are files at TNA in the AIR and AVIA series.

Re: "ROOSTER" procedure

The US also used the term Rooster for the same purpose/meaning.
Search for "rooster" on this page.
