Ju86P 5101 lost 6 September 1942
Hi guys
Ju86P 5101 of 2.(F)/123 was forced to carry out an emergency landing on 6 September 1942 following contact with Spitfires. It came down at the German-occupied landing ground at Bir-el-Abd, and was 60% damaged (a write-off?) What happened to this aircraft? Was it dismantled and flown back for salvage? Cheers Brian |

Hello Brian,
this is from ULTRA HW 5/145: "From G.A.F. Station Command 6/IV to 2(F) 123 Castelli on 12/10/1942: Ju 86 Works No 5101 was destroyed by fire on 11/10. Pressure-cabin entirely destroyed". Greetings Carl |

Many thanks Carl
Therefore it was destroyed deliberately by German forces. Mystery solved, yet again! Cheers Brian |

Brian/Carl
Just to get this solved 100%, I have an article in Avions regarding 2.(F)/123 which states this happened on Sept 6th and not October. It also says it was shot down by Spitfire from 103 MU. On top it also claims the Ju 86 was an R-1 model!! Any further commentsd to that? Cheers Stig |
Re: Ju86P 5101 lost 6 September 1942
Hi Stig
Nice to hear from you. I trust you are both well. Yes, the Ju86 forced-landed at Bir-el-Abd after combat with Spit of 103 MU on 6 September, BUT was destroyed by German forces when they evacuated that airfield circa 12 October. Cheers Brian |
Re: Ju86P 5101 lost 6 September 1942
Thanks Brian
Yes, re-reading your first e-mail I see you say Sept 6th. Guess I was to focused on Carl's dates. Makes sense they destroyed it of course upon evacuation. Cheers Stig |
