RAF Hurricane and Spitfire questions
I have several questions about Hurricanes and Spitfires for a project I'm working on.
1) Can anyone give me the aircraft code for L1547, the first production Hurricane, when it was lost while flying with 310 Squadron on October 10, 1940? 2) Can anyone give me a code/serial tieup for any Hurricane flown by "Cobber" Kain with 73 Squadron during the Battle Of France? 3) Does anyone have a serial tieup for a Spitfire of 130 Squadron, coded PJ-M? Thanks, Peter |
Hurricane L1547
Just a quick note to say that Hurricane L1547 was serving with 312 Sqn when it was lost and not 310 Sqn.
The unit code for 312 Sqn was DU |
Oops! Guess I had a(nother) senior moment. Of course it was 312 Squadron. Thanks for that clarification, and colour me chastened!

'Cobber' Kain
According to C. Shores he used P2535 'K' when he claimed a Do17 on 10 May. The same aircraft was used the next day when he claimed another Do17 and an unconfirmed Bf110.
He used P2559 'D' when he claimed a Bf109E and an unconfirmed Bf110 on 17 May. Wether the aircraft were marked TP-K and TP-D or just 'K' and 'D' is not known (most probably just 'K' and 'D') by me, i.e. I haven't checked for any images. According to D. Mintere he was flying L1826 TP-B or TP-R when he was killed. Other Hurricanes used by Kain in combat (without known codes) were L1898, L1766, L1808. Best wishes/Håkan |
Thank you, Hakan! Much obliged, sir. That's a great start!

Re: Hurricane L1547
Hi,
just to confirm that L1547 was serving with No. 312 Sq since 5.9.40. On 10.10.40 Sgt O. Hanzlicek got killed - more info about the accident can be found at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/lait/site/...ne%20L1547.htm I am afraid that there is not known individual letter for this plane. Pavel |
