Attention: Email bugs!

Ruy,
I just got an email, which seems to come from TOCH, but what I am sure it is not from you.
It is like the following (including header):

"Return-Path: <rhortaAT12oclockhigh.net>

Thanks for use of our software. "

The email has an an attachment "guupd02.exe", which I naturally did NOT open.
Please check your PC for a virus or a worm.
Of course I do not make you reponsible for this mail.
Best wishes
Robert

TOCH doesn't use that E-mail address, so at least it is forum unrelated, but I do use it as my personal account. Could be that someone has been scanning the public E-mail addresses - choosing this option is always a risk.

Will look into it, as far as I can...

Do not remember (ever) sending you any mail, I'll (double)check my system for possible virus activity.

I'd like to know if more people are encountering these problems.

Ruy Horta 7th February 2005 19:37

I've received two similar messages, again this should have nothing to do with the forum, since all mail goes through a different account.

This is my personal E-mail account.

In my case the sender is: kazimATfreemail.hu

Could be a hoax, could be someone using public E-mail addresses on the Forum, which is a risk of not hiding your E-mail.

(EDIT: wink to Peter K)

Ruy,

I have had email to myself, apparently... someone has got my email address and is using it for spam (Viagra, etc...)

This seems to be getting more and more frequent. Firewall, anti-spyware, anti-adware, anti-virus s/ware and it still happens.

Any simple solutions welcome (if that's ok with you, Ruy).

It's just an virus worm's work. It scans all available captions with @ inside and tries to send his own copy to as many PCs as possible.
It seems that someone still has no antivirus software and firewall at all :(

Ruy Horta 8th February 2005 07:15

As a precaution I did a full scan and found nothing.

Running several layers of protection on my home system.

Do not use anyway anywhere on public place on net @ sign in your address....use rather name(AT)something.something
Avery inteligent web user knows that email should contain @ and changes it for (AT):|
that is what I do...

Problem is not one of displaying the address alone, since my new address hadn't been displayed, yet its public on this forum (user option), as you can judge by the mail button.

Since I host the forum, I cannot opt to hide the address - how would you contact me otherwise?

I agree that you should never type an address in a message.

HOWEVER, this could very well be a hoax by someone who doesn't like this forum.

As I said earlier - worms collects e-mail addresses from whole PC. Not only from address books of e-mail software (Outlook Express is not safe e-mail software), cached webpages etc.

Via Private Message for instance. And I'm no joking, this is very useful feature.

That's true, e-mail address should never be exposed without real reason.

I don't think so. I'm almost 100% sure that it was worm. One of these worms which have sending ability and always fakes sender's e-mail address.
