Great author! I have read this book and read nearly all his Russian articles on warspot.ru.

Helion also published the hardcover edition. It's an outstanding scholarly production, but I would be inclined to think its audience would be comparatively limited, perhaps too limited to warrant a heavily truncated paperback edition? Just a thought.

Yep, I guess the Amazon version is a typo.

I have heard from a very credible source that Timin is a very biased author who basically supports Stalinist interpretations...

Jukka -

I read the book cover-to-cover and only found a few place that would support your opinion, and in each case Timin was quoting another person or article. His reproduction of data from wartime documents seemed unbiased and accurate to me.

I, too, was told the same thing you were told, but I gathered it was in reference to opinions expressed in a few magazine articles, his spoken words during TV interviews and on computer Blogs.

Larry, the source was (and is) a well-known Finnish aothority on Soviet aviation himself. His comment directly translated:"Timin's style is however old-school (if not even 'Stalinist') in that he does not explain why and how the Red Air Force even entered the Baltics and the Winter War Iis barely mentioned (in which most the discussed units did participate in from the bases in the Baltics!) in passim. "

Jukka,

Your quote raises an obvious question: Why not find out? I have this feeling based on zero evidence that experts/specialists rarely communicate with authors with new books in preparation. After the book is published then the criticisms appear. Is this accurate?
