Bf 109G-4 Reconnaissance Pilot - Hans Buchwald

Some really nice, sharp photos have recently been posted on the Internet regarding Lt. Hans Buchwald of the Nahaufklärungsgruppe 4 of Luftflotte 6. He fell to Russian flak near Kursk in 1943.

Hans Buchwald's nephew posted the photos and other documentation. The nephew also had another uncle who served in the USAAF flying B-25 bombers from Corsica.

Other documentation includes his log book, flight school photobook, and a copy of the heart-breaking letter that notified his young wife of his death in combat. The photos of the aircraft are very close up and clear.

The nephew asks for assistance in identifying the decoration worn by Buchwald in one of the photos. He also notes that several photos show his uncle carrying or being presented with flowers. What was the basis of this custom? Finally, there is a photo of a certain General Lommelsen and he would like to know if anyone has any additional information about him.

This is a nice presentation, please stop by and take a look: http://www.warwingsart.com/12thAirForce/buchwald.html

I have searched the Axis Biographical Research site and cannot find a reference to a Lommelsen of any rank or branch of service. I see that the fellow in the picture is in fact an army general so perhaps the name quoted is wrong?

Any ideas about this out there?

Re: Bf 109G-4 Reconnaissance Pilot - Hans Buchwald

Hans Buchwald is wearing the Iron Cross second class in one of the pictures. Only the ribbon would be worn on the uniform after being awarded. The Army officer "Lommelsen" is wearing the Knights Cross, German Cross in Gold and the Iron Cross First class with the badge indicating he received the Iron Cross First class in World War I.

Re: Bf 109G-4 Reconnaissance Pilot - Hans Buchwald

I have managed to discover that the General's name was actually Joachim Lemelsen.

He commanded Panzers in the Battle of Kursk where Buchwald was killed. He would have had a very intense interest in the observations made by Buchwald and the Recon flights.

Here is more information on him:

Nice website.
Just a notice, the Bf 109 WNr. 6689 is a Bf 109 F-2 build at WNF and not a Bf 109 G-4.

The "white 16" is a G-4.

I suppose we can now record the 8-Jun-43 loss as 'white 17'?

Doesn't anyone know the real Russian name for Ryschkowo? I've seen it in Jim's post above for Lt Reinhard Cernhoff and on the linking site with Lt Ferdinand von Paczenski both of NAGr4. I know it must be in the area of Orel.

Re: Bf 109G-4 Reconnaissance Pilot - Hans Buchwald

Ryschkowo = Ryshkovo. Only three of them are listed in a Gazetteer of 3,000,000 place names, and these are:

Ryschkovo #1: 67.5 km NW of Kursk;
Ryschkovo #2: 99.3 km due north of Smolensk;
Ryschkovo #3: 7.4 km S of Kursk along a main rail line.

Since NAGr. 4 was operating along the Kursk sector on 8 June, your Ryshkovo is either #1 or #3, with #3 being the most probable.

At first, the correct name was "Reinhold Cernhoff" not "Reinhard", I know it and I'm pretty sure about it because my grandpa was the only "Cernhoff" in all germany in that time.

Could you tell me where did you get that source?
