11 November 1941 - 56 Squadron Typhoon crash

Dear all,

Am looking for details about the NAME of the pilot and serial number related to the very first casualty with the Hawker Typhoon Mark Ia from Nș56 Squadron, on the 11th November 1941.

It is said that the pilot died by CO2 getting into the cockpit and that a huge crash investigation was made.

Is that CRASH Investigation available somewhere? If yes, where?

Thank you all,
Adriano

Hello Adriano,

The orb of the Squadron (AIR27/529) mentions for 1/11/1941 :
P/O.Deck flying a Typhoon dived into the ground from 3000 feet. This accident was found to be due to Carbon Monoxide poisoning. All Typhoons were grounded pending further investigation.

No serial of the aircraft is mentioned.

The CWGC website mentions as his full name Deck James Frederick, service number 100648, RAF(VR) .

Best regards

Luc

11 November 1941 - 56 Squadron Typhoon crash

Luc, Simon and Col.,
I was mislead by the information on "Le Typhoon" ( mister kit), which informed the date as 11th November...had tried the CGWC and got no joy either...hence my thread.
Sad news to learn that the brother's Pilot were also KIA in RAF service...poor mother and father...
Thank you all for enlightning me up on This subject.
Humbly yours,
Adriano

Hello,
The book "Fly For Your Life " by Larry Forester, the "biography" of Stanford Tuck gives a rather romanticized version of this incident with Tuck about to take this particular Typhoon up when he is called away and hands over to Deck
thus giving yet another example of "Tuck's Luck"

Dear Bruce,

Thanks a lot for that information. I do have "Fly for my life", but sadly memory did not make the link with that entry....I may have read this book some 10 years ago, though.

Will check it very soon...Thank you very very much.
