major Alexander Gillis VMF-311 in WW2?
I am interested in finding out more about WW2 flyers of the USN and USMC who claim victories in Korea.
I know that Plog was with VB-83 (SB2C), Amen was with VC-82 (FM2) and Lamb with VF-27 and 51 (F6F); the careers of Bolt and Glenn are well-known but I am especially interested in finding of this officer's flying career. I know he flew with VMF-311 and was assigned to the USAF to fly F-86 in 1952. I also know he flew in Vietnam but can anyone tell me if he flew combat missions in WW2 and if so, with which squadron and when? regards Keith |

Keith,
The grave marker for Gillis shown on Find-A-Grave shows service in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. I do not know what unit he served with in WW2, and he made no claims in WW2. Enjoy! Frank. |
