Shot Down B24 55 BW
This picture is from Michael Balss' Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/153387415259654/. It shows the crash site of a 15th AF B-24 Liberator. The information n the back of the photo says: "Liberator by Marseille. Alfred's second.". From the picture we can see the 55 BW (460th ,464th, 465th and 485th BGs) square. Unfortunately, the bottom half of the rudder which would denote the Group is not visible. The visible numbers are "2525" which would correspond to 42-525xx. "By Marseille", would indicate a 15th AF mission against southern France and the first name of Alfred might help to identify this bird. |
Re: Shot Down B24 55 BW
42-52552 was last seen at Miramas and two crew members were buried at Salon-de-Provence. According to a couple of French websites, the crash location was
in the District of Saint Georges, Cornillon-Confoux. The plane was from the 460th BG, 760th BS and was lost 6 August, 1944. The plane appears to have been downed by flak according to the MACR, so perhaps not the correct plane if "Alfred" was a Luftwaffe pilot. |

Comrade Kaki !
Based on the Luftwaffe DLM team uniforms inspecting the wreck this location may not be France at all but some where near Ploesti , could well be Lt Minervini Robert Lib's wreck , 460th BG which crashed on 31st of May near Ploesti . I may be wrong but my instinct is telling me otherwise Alex K |
Re: Shot Down B24 55 BW
Minervini's plane, 42-52528, was also downed by flak.
