hello Mike,

I assume that you are quite new with this sort of research? No problem, we all have started somehow without a clue where to start. Please keep in mind that forums like these are full of people, wanting to help. Keep also in mind that trying to figure out such questions yourselves, is the most rewarding procedure.

Soon a new book will be published with all losses of the nightfighter wings of the Luftwaffe.
Author: Veit Scherzer
Title: Die personellen Verluste der deutschen Nachtjagdgeschwader 1940 - 1945
(500 pages, format 17 x 24 cm, ISBN 978-3-938845-21-9)

Not cheap (87 euro's) but a wealth of information if you have not access to copies of the original German documents, called Namentliche Verlustmelding (personal loss record).

As far I can see in my databases, Fw. Helmut Burckhardt survived WW-2. I do have a reference to him, being with the 2./NJG 5 in 1944.

All the best, Marcel Hogenhuis

Marcel,

Very interesting news about the forthcoming book by Scherzer. Who is the publisher and when is it expected to be released?

Tom

This must be him:
Burkhard, Helmut Fw 2 1/NJG-5 Bf 110, Ju 88 EK 1 & 2, Night Fighter Operational Clasp One known victory, a "4 mot" at St Leu on 8 July, 1944. A 2nd, a "4 mot" at Lisieux on 25 July, 1944. Boiten, 4 victories.

Unfortunaly no mention of him surviving the war.

While this sounds like a fascinating title, I can't help but wonder what he may have that wasn't in the 2 Balss NF loss volumes, combined with various other sources. On the other hand the two Balss books don't seem to have been available for too long, so in lieu of their availability....the cost for one volume probably isn't that different from the cost of the two Balss books. And that implies no criticism of Scherzer's work. Have his DKiG book which is excellent. I certainly await the reviews.

Hi, all.

Guess you more or less said it yourself, thenelm... Balss' two volumes and other sources combined, most would find one single sources, even a costly one a better option.

I have Balss' volumes, but would welcome a new work based on the NVM's for these units.

Hi,

Saw your thread and bought above mentioned book.
I have several sterbebild of nachjager and have already located many.
Couldn't find information on the following:

Gefreiter Hans Bauer - lost on 19.09.1944 (Bordschutze) over Budapest;
Obergefreiter Albert Kulzer - lost on 22.06.1944 (Bordfunker) and
Obergefreiter Ludger Drees - lost on 24.06.1944 (Bordfunker) killed in the West.

Does anyone know why these men were not included?
Or have any information onthem.

Many thanks

Rick
