2Lt. Herbert A. Anderson ,O-687222

Hello,
Re: 2Lt. Herbert A. Anderson O-687222.
79th FG/87th FS.
Killed in action on 26th March, 1944.
Anzio .
The Squadron was using P-40's and I think also some P-47's.

Anyone know the serial number of the a/c involved ?

Also

I am at a loss to follow the DPAA listing him as an MIA, because although he is recorded in ABMC Italy (Tablets of the missing) on Findagrave he is recorded as buried in the USA.
Photos of memorial stone and also of the headstone are shown .

Alex, I think he is still missing. If the brass government marker were issued today, it would also include the phrase "In Memory of", but I don't know what the rules were in the 1940s or 1950s. I am more inclined in this case to go with the DPAA and and ABMC.

I believe the 87th FS was still flying P-40s at this time, but I have no idea on a serial number. From the history of the 79th FG:

"On the 26th, 87 Sqn. lost Lt. Anderson, who had re-
ceived a direct hit in the cockpit by an 88mm gun. Just
a handful of black puffs were evident as the for-
mation was returning to base from an uneventful
Anzio patrol. One of these hit Lt. Anderson. "

Alex, It appears the black dot next to the name of Sgt Percy G Anderson denotes remains recovered, so noted by ABMC here

https://www.abmc.gov/node/421256#.W6T012hKiM8

This would suggest 2Lt. Herbert A Anderson is still missing with the headstone being another cenotaph memorial.

Re: 2Lt. Herbert A. Anderson ,O-687222

You are correct. He is still listed as Missing in Action. The name above his with the Rosetta denotes a missing soldier, who has since been recovered and repatriated. The state side marker is a memorial plaque.

Sgt Percy G Anderson interment article, published in the Rochester New York, Democrat and Chronicle Thursday 5 Nov 1964

Off Topic. Attempting to fix this "ground" MIA/KIA F-A-G page. With the current page info he remained MIA, this should soon be fixed. Without the query from Alex Sgt Anderson might still have remained MIA in NY.

Hello Scott & ssg Keay,

Yes Herbert A. Anderson is three names above Percy G. on the memorial.

My issue is Herbert A. and the Headstone and "buried" and the memorial plaque both(?) at Dixon in the US.

Re: 2Lt. Herbert A. Anderson ,O-687222

Its just a family headstone memorial Alex. And they apllied for a got a plaque. If his remains were in any way officially recovered his name would have a rosette. There is no mystery here. You have to understand that people enter info on findagrave but they do not take into account the context. The entire contents of the ABMC and CWGC has been loaded onto findagrave by people.

Re: 2Lt. Herbert A. Anderson ,O-687222

Alex,
Concur with Dennis! 2nd Lt. Herbert A Anderson remains MIA. Everything else is a cenotaph memorial in his memory. Find A Grave, being a grave locator site actually makes it difficult for contributors to indicate grave vs cenotaph.

As Rolland noted in post #2 this loss was attributed as follows; "Lt. Anderson, who had received a direct hit in the cockpit by an 88mm gun". Whether over land or water few remains would have been left to recover.
