Only one Joe, Beware of inaccuracies, there are quite a few!

I dont' know anything about the Holmes' book, but I highly recommend Francis K. Mason's The Avro Lancaster, published in 1989 by Aston Publications. Now out of print (and used copies are not cheap), it covers the development and operations of the Lancaster in 436 well illustrated pages. Included are representative color profiles, a fold-out cutaway illustration of a Lanc, and an 88 page appendix identifying all Lancasters, with a short "history" of each.

Harry Holmes is a respected local (NW England) historian employed for a long time by Avros and associated with their historical museum. I'm a little surprised to see warnings about his Lancaster book (well, everyone makes some mistakes, but....). What particular faults did you find?

IŽd like to know that too. I am aware of MasonŽs book but the price is quite steep for used copies. Maybe IŽll stick to the slimmish Lancaster book by the Royal Aeronautical Society!

Maybe BillG meant the first edition - from the blurb I've read I believe the second edition had a number of corrections and new info. I have the book on my wish list at the moment and intend to buy it at some stage and would be interested in any reviews too.

Any update on this? Especially on the nature the those errors (if the errors concern serial numbers, squadron ids etc., I do not care, I am interested in development, testing, production, handling etc.).

The Holmes book covers more of the development and variants I feel, whereas the wonderful Mason book has more on the operations and is more readable.....
